A scarce work. These letters document events in an interesting time in history, just preceding the French Revolution. Upon investigation, the translation found out that the majority of these letters, which had greatly interested her, were written by the Chevalier de Boufflers. Boufflers's mother was a correspondent of Voltaire, which perhaps influenced his lively letter writing. Translated from French by Leonora Sophia van Marter, Countess of Tankerville, an American music teacher who married George Bennet, the Earl of Tankerville. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light rubbing and marking to the boards, being heavier to the rear board. A small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Minor discolouration to the spine. Prior owners ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Very Good. book.
