Gombrichs sind in ihrer Bedeutung unumstritten. Die Analyse seines umfangreichen und vielseitigen Werks ist bemüht, die theoretischen und methodischen Grundlagen zu hinterfragen, dabei aber gleichzeitig ein Gesamtbild der für Gombrich charakteristischen Art der Kunstbetrachtung zu entwerfen. Dies geschieht auf zwei Wegen: Zum einen wird anhand der wichtigsten Schriften Gombrichs - angefangen bei seiner Dissertation (1934/35), über Art and Illusion (1960) und The Sense of Order (1979) bis hin zu The Image and the Eye (1982) - die Entwicklung seines theoretischen, d.h. vor allem psychologischen Fundaments nachgezeichnet und untersucht. Einflüsse aus anderen Disziplinen, so etwa von Ulric Neisser und Richard L. Gregory als Psychologen, werden verfolgt und hinsichtlich ihrer Bedeutung bewertet. In einem zweiten Teil stehen Aufsätze zu solchen Themen im Vordergrund, die auf unterschiedliche Art immer um zentrale Probleme der Kunstgeschichte kreisen. Die Synthese der in der Diskussion gewonnenen Erkenntnisse führt schließlich zu einem in der Ausprägung neuen Modell der Kunstbetrachtung, in dem sich streng historisches, kunstverständiges und rationales Vorgehen gegenseitig ergänzen.
