An illustrated book published as a fundraiser for the legal defense of the more than fifty City College of New York (CCNY) faculty and staff members dismissed following the Rapp-Coudert investigation into subversive activities within the New York education system. Carol Smith who later taught at CCNY and curated the traveling exhibition The Struggle for Free Speech at CCNY, 1931-42 called the events the "largest political purge of faculty in the history fo the United States" (Smith, 48). Although some of those dismissed were indeed members of the Communist Party, many were merely victims of circumstance or were punished due to their membership in the College Teachers Union (CTU). The CTU created the Committee for the Defense of Public Education to raise public awareness of the Rapp-Coudert's closed door meetings and the political witch hunt against left-leaning faculty. They organized letter-writing and petition campaigns, held mass public meetings, issued daily bulletins, and published this book. Unsurprisingly, the Committee for the Defense of Public Education was listed as a Communist Front organization by HUAC throughout the 1940s. The book includes a short introduction by Committee member Bella Todd and an introduction by the activist anthropologist Franz Boas. The text was written by Lous Lerman, one of the suspended faculty and includes 30 full page illustrations from some of the most famous and influential progressive artists of the time, including Rockwell Kent, William Gropper, Al Young, Aaron Douglas, Elizabeth Olds, Louis Lozowick, Hugo Gellert, William Steig, and many others. Comb bound covers (11" x 8 ½"), [60] p., illustrations. First three leaves detached from binding, stain evident along the spine of the rear cover, a good, complete copy. Uncommon in the trade and not over-represented institutionally. Reference: Smith, Carol. "The Dress Rehearsal for McCarthyism." Academe, Vol. 97, No. 4 (July-August) 2011, pp. 48-51.
