Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition Thus. KB65.357 pp, [ix] ads. With gift inscription from Alfred Stieglitz dated 1943. Octavo. Original greige cloth covers with dark red title to front cover and spine. Front cover a bit grubby, spine sunned. Interior front hinge is cracking, text is clean and unmarked. T…he first free end paper has the inscription: "For Guy Metraux, in memory of his hour's visit at An American Place, Alfred Siteglitz, August 3/43. A memorable hour for him, & Millquist & Zoler. " Jerome Millquist was an art historian and writer, and Emile Zoler was a painter who helped Stieglitz set up An American Place. Both were longtime friends whom he occasionally photographed. Guy Metraux may be the delegate to the Red Cross after the War who corresponded with H. L. Mencken, and who was the father of Canadian Guy Metraux. The book has two photographic plates at the front by Stieglitz, along with articles by and about him. Also included are essays/poems by Andre Malraux, Herbert J. Seligmann, Henry Miller; John Beecher, Muriel Rukeyser, Dorothy Norman, Vladimir Pozner, Harlan Stone, and others. Interestingly, the editorial introduction discusses the role of artists during a time of war and the responsibilty of artists and writers to "create freedom to support freedom." And, they go on to say, "The two photographs by Stieglitz that we are including are part of a series which he properly calls 'Equivalents.' Equivalents of his vision of man's quest for fulfillment. Equivalents of his own sense of wonder and affirmation." An interesting look at the state of the arts at midcentury during wartime, and a scarce example with Stieglitz's signature and a small glimpse into his life. Another interesting ort in the book is a business card from Kohlberg's (Antiques; Indian Goods; Gifts, since 1888) from Denver, Colorado. Although the card is bright and fresh looking, it appears from the 6-digit telephone number to be from the late 40s or early 50s. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 357 pages.
