He was a MacArthur Fellow, and was awareded the Erasmus Prize, the Kluge Prize, and the Jerusalem Prize. All three volumes here are the first printings in English: Volume 1, "The Founders"; Volume 2, "The Golden Age"; and Volume 3; "The Breakdown". First edition in English, first printing. Complete in three volumes. Translated from the Polish by P. S. Falla. Publisher's original navy blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A better than very good set, the bindings square and firm with some rubbing and bumping to the spine tips and extremities, the cloth lightly faded to the upper edge of volume I is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout with some spotting to the upper edge of the first two volumes. Complete with the very good rubbed and creased, lightly toned to the upper edge of volumes I and III, volume II with some fading to the spine. All volumes are price-clipped to the lower front flap. The Polish philosopher's critically acclaimed analysis of Marxist thought, written between 1968 and 1976, at a time when it was impossible to publish the work in Communist ruled Poland.
