The first attempt at transliterating into Portuguese the Arabic diplomatic documents relating to Portuguese history and trade preserved at the royal archives at Torre do Tombo. Sousa (1734-1812), Professor of Arabic at Lisbon University, translated 58 letters exchanged between King Manuel and King Joâo III of Portugal and Arab rulers from North Africa, the Gulf, East Africa, India and the East Indies from 1503 to 1528 here first published . The ruler of Ormuz, Mahomed Xab, was defeated by the Portuguese in 1506 which allowed them to control the Straights on the East Indian trade route. The subjects of the correspondence range from diplomatic and legal matters to trading regulations for Christians in Africa and India on the writers and recipients of the letters.
