Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 184 pages. Published in 1991. Retrospective collection of interviews. The single most accessible introduction to the life and work of Claude Levi-Strauss. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents "Conversations With Claude Levi-Strauss". Casts a retrospective and poignant glow on his long and stupendous career, and more important, is immensely approachable, readable, and riveting. "At the age of eighty, one of the most influential yet reclusive intellectuals of the twentieth century consented to his first interviews in nearly thirty years. Reveals the great anthropologist speaking of his life and work with ease and humor. Rich in Levi-Strauss' candid appraisals of some of the best-known figures of the Parisian intelligentsia: The Surrealists Andre Breton and Max Ernst, with whom Levi-Strauss shared a bohemian life in 1940's Manhattan; Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Albert Camus, the stars of Existentialism; Michel Leiris, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Lacan, among others. His long friendships with Jakobson and Merleau-Ponty are recalled as well as his encounters with the most prominent figures in American anthropology: Lowie, Boas (who suddenly died in his chair beside Levi-Strauss at a banquet at Columbia University), Benedict, Linton, Mead, and Kroeber. His straightforward answers to Eribon's penetrating questions - What is myth? What is structuralism? What is philosophy? - clarify his intellectual motives, the development of his research, and his thoughts on anthropology today" (Publisher's blurb). Levi-Strauss also speaks movingly (and ruefully) about his failures more than his achievements, which is a very rare thing indeed: He was once denied election to the College de France, the most prestigious and influential academic body in all of Europe, not just France. He dreamt of being able to pursue his two greatest professional hopes, but did not have the requisite talent for either one of them: To be an investigative reporter and a great playwright at the same time. And his most profound personal, not just intellectual, debts are to Wagner, Proust, and Rousseau. An absolute "must-have" title for Claude Levi-Strauss collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century. A fine copy. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 405 pages. Published in 2010. The first full-length biography in English on subject. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Patrick Wilcken's "Claude Levi-Strauss: Poet In The Laboratory". The definitive account of the life, work, and legacy of Claude Levi-Strauss, father of modern anthropology, and one of the postwar era's most influential thinkers. "Just as Freud had shaken up the antiquarian discipline of psychiatry so had Levi-Strauss revolutionized anthropology, transforming it from the Colonial-era study of 'exotic' tribes to one consumed with fundamental questions about the nature of humanity and civilization itself. Levi-Strauss was both a hero to contemporary intellectuals and an international celebrity. Gives the reader a fascinating intellectual tour of the anthropologist's landmark works: 'Tristes Tropiques', a literary meditation on his travels and fieldwork; 'The Savage Mind', which showed that 'primitive' people are driven by the same intellectual curiosities as their Western counterparts; and finally, his monumental four-volume 'Mythologiques', a study of the universal structures of native mythology. An evocative journey and an intellectual biography of one of the twentieth-century's most influential minds" (Publisher's blurb). Levi-Strauss' nemeses were "culture" and "history", which keep people apart and make them think they are either superior or inferior to others. His faith was in "myth" and his weapon was science, which, by definition, seeks and discovers universal truths that transcend specific cultures and histories. His greatest contribution, still intensely debated to this day, was to dissolve the distinction between the "primitive" and the "modern" mind. It remains a mind-boggling insight, but the truth is always radical. "The scientific mind does not provide the right answers as much as it asks the right questions" (Claude Levi-Strauss). An absolute "must-have" title for Claude Levi-Strauss collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright.
