Facing East pairs James A. Michener's reflections with Jack Levine's response to Japanese art and visual culture in one of the more elaborate American livre d'artiste productions of its period. Issued in an edition of 2500 numbered sets, the work combines Michener's text with original prints by Levine and a separate portfolio reproducing his sketchbook. Four original color lithographs, an original woodcut on Japanese paper, and 54 richly colored sketchbook plates create a work intended as much for the print collector as the reader. SIGNED TWICE BY BOTH MICHENER AND LEVINE: Number 2124 of 2500 sets. Signed by James A. Michener and Jack Levine at the limitation and additionally signed by both inside the upper portion of the portfolio case. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A LAVISH TWO-PART PORTFOLIO. Large folio portfolio of woven beige moire, gilt-lettered at the spine and secured by a broad black Madras goatskin belt-and-loop closure.The two portfolios are housed together in the publisher's matching folding case. Limited to 2500 numbered sets; this is No. 2124. The first inner portfolio, also in beige moire with black leather closure, contains Michener's text in loose sheets as issued, illustrated by Levine, together with four original color lithographs printed on Rives paper and an original woodcut printed on Japon Kawanaka paper. Comparable complete copies and auction descriptions confirm these principal original prints. The second portfolio contains Levine's sketchbook: 54 loose color plates with tissue guards, reproducing watercolors, gouaches, and drawings. The sketchbook images were printed in Paris using phototypie and pochoir processes on Ingres paper, with multiple colors applied by hand. CONDITION: FINE. GIFT QUALITY. Portfolio, inner portfolios, prints, text sheets, and sketchbook plates exceptionally well preserved, without flaws of consequence noted. Original case and closures remain attractive and complete. A particularly clean example of a production whose large format, loose contents, pale fabric covering, and multiple portfolios frequently result in handling wear, soiling, or loss of individual components. ARTISTIC SIGNIFICANCE: JACK LEVINE FACING JAPANESE ART.: Better known for the sharp social observation and satire of his Social Realist paintings, Jack Levine here engaged directly with Japanese art, particularly the visual vocabulary associated with ukiyo-e. The result combines original printmaking with the more intimate imagery of his travel sketchbook. ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS & WOODCUTS: The production itself is integral to that encounter. Original lithographs and woodcuts are accompanied by 54 reproductions of Levine's watercolors, gouaches, and drawings, their elaborate pochoir coloring retaining something of the immediacy and chromatic richness of the originals.
