A very scarce first issue of the pamphlet written by Sir Lewis Stucley (also called Stukley) petitioning the King (James I) to restore his reputation following the execution of Sir Walter Raleigh. Stucley, then Vice-Admiral of Devon (and also known as the guardian of Pocohontas' so…n), was appointed as Keeper of Raleigh when he returned from his expedition to the Orinoco in June 1618. The expedition had failed in its attempt to acquire gold for King James and a Royal Proclamation stated that Raleigh had broken the Peace Treaty between England and Spain. Raleigh was arrested and later executed in October of that year, and Stucley was widely accused of unfair conduct in Raleigh's arrest and execution. He was named Sir Judas Stucley by his accusers. Despite the King's support in this and later problems, Stucley's reputation did not recover and he fled to the Isle of Lundy where it is said that he became insane, dying there in 1620. This copy is a first issue with a drop-head title and no title page. It is stitched with the first leaf blank. This leaf and the first page have an old ink number - 430, and the leaf has an old ink inscription 'For my ??? Sent from Mr Locke'. There are some newer pencil notes and the bottom. The first page has a decorative headpiece and initial capital. Text 17pp - ending 'Your Maiesties loyall Subject and Seruant, Levves Stvcley'. The Impramatur page on the verso has a head and tailpiece. The text is clear and clean, with some toning around page edges and a pale water stain affecting the side margin and some text from p 15 to the end.
