Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1. Cloth, dj. Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. Contemporary translation studies have explored translation not as a means of recovering a source text, but as a process of interpretation and production of literary meaning and value. Translation and the Classic uses this idea to discuss the relationship between translation and the classic text. It proposes a framework in which 'the classic' figures less as an autonomous entity than as the result of the interplay between source text and translation practice and examines the consequences of this hypothesis for questioning established definitions of the classic: how does translation mediate the social, political and national uses of 'the classics' in the contemporary global context of changing canons and traditions? The volume contains a total of eighteen original essays, plus an introduction, written by scholars working in classics and classical reception, translation studies, literary theory, comparative literature, theatre and performance studies, history and philosophy and makes a potent contribution to pressing debates in all of these areas.…

Prefekt. Condizione: Sehr gut. Gebraucht - Sehr gut Sg - leichte Beschädigungen oder Verschmutzungen, ungelesenes Mängelexemplar, gestempelt - From the early modern period, Greek historiography has been studied in the context of Cicero's notion historia magistra vitae and considered to exclude conceptions of the future as different from the present and past. Comparisons with the Roman, Judeo-Christian and modern historiography have sought to justify this perspective by drawing on a category of the future as a temporal mode that breaks with the present. In this volume, distinguished classicists and historians challenge this contention by raising the question of what the future was and meant in antiquity by offering fresh considerations of prognostic and anticipatory voices in Greek historiography from Herodotus to Appian and by tracing the roots of established views on historical time in the opposition between antiquity and modernity. They look both at contemporary scholarly argument and the writings of Greek historians in order to explore the relation of time, especially the future, to an idea of the historical that is formulated in the plural and is always in motion. By reflecting on the prognostic of historical time the volume will be of interest not only to classical scholars, but to all who are interested in the history and theory of historical time.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2011 Cambridge University Press hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. From the cover: #This book examines the conceptual and temporal frames through which modern Western historiography has linked itself to classical antiquity. In doing so, it articulates a genealogical problematic of what history is and a more strictly focused reappraisal of Greek and Roman historical thought. Ancient ideas of history have played a key role in modern debates about history writing, from Kant through Hegel to Nietzsche and Heidegger, and from Friedrich Creuzer through George Grote and Theodor Mommsen to Momigliano and Moses Finley; yet scholarship has paid little attention to the theoretical implications of the reception of these ideas. The essays in this collection cover a wide range of relevant topics and approaches and boast distinguished authors from across Europe in the fields of classics, ancient and modern history and the theory of historiography. Contents: Introduction Unfounding times: The idea and ideal of ancient history in Western historical thought - Alexandra Lianeri Theorising Western Time: Concepts and Models 1 Time's authority - François Hartog 2 Exemplarity and anti-exemplarity in early modern Europe - Peter Burke 3 Greek philosophy and Western history: A philosophy-centred temporality - Giuseppe Cambiano 4 Historiography and political theology: Momigliano and the end of history - Howard Caygill Ancient History and Modern Temporalities 5 The making of a bourgeois antiquity: Wilhelm von Humboldt and Greek history - Stefan Rebenich 6 Modern histories of ancient Greece: Genealogies, contexts and eighteenth-century narrative historiography - Giovanna Ceserani 7 Acquiring (a) historicity: Greek history, temporalities and Eurocentrism in the Sattelzeit (1750-1850) - Kostas Vlassopoulos 8 Herodotus and Thucydides in the view of nineteenth-century German historians - Ulrich Muhlack 9 Monumentality and the meaning of the past in ancient and modern historiography - Neville Morley Unfounding Time in and Through Ancient Historical Thought 10 Thucydides and social change: Between akribeia and universality - Rosalind Thomas 11 Historia magistra vitae in Herodotus and Thucydides? The exemplary use of the past and ancient and modern temporalities - Jonas Grethlein 12 Repetition and exemplarity in historical thought: Ancient Rome and the ghosts of modernity - Ellen O'Gorman 13 Time and authority in the Chronicle of Sulpicius Severus - Michael Stuart Williams Afterword 14 Ancient history in the eighteenth century - Oswyn Murray 15 Seeing in and through time - John Dunn. …

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 2006 OUP hardcover edition. Unread copy in very good condition. From the cover: In the one hundred and ten years covered by volume four of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English, what characterized translation was above all the move to encompass what Goethe called 'world literature'. This occurred, paradoxically, at a time when English literature is often seen as increasingly self-sufficient. In Europe, the culture of Germany was a new source of inspiration, as were the medieval literatures and the popular ballads of many lands, from Spain to Serbia. From the mid-century, the other literatures of the North, both ancient and modern, were extensively translated, and the last third of the century saw the beginning of the Russian vogue. Meanwhile, as the British presence in the East was consolidated, translation helped readers to take possession of 'exotic' non-European cultures, from Persian and Arabic to Sanskrit and Chinese. The thirty-five contributors bring an enormous range of expertise to the exploration of these new developments and of the fascinating debates which reopened old questions about the translator's task, as the new literalism, whether scholarly or experimental, vied with established modes of translation. The complex story unfolds in Britain and its empire, but also in the United States, involving not just translators, publishers, and readers, but also institutions such as the universities and the periodical press. Nineteenth-century English literature emerges as more open to the foreign than has been recognized before, with far-reaching effects on its orientation.
