Ce périple commence en compagnie de Marwan Rashed, «Les débuts de la philosophie moderne, VIIe-IXe siècle» (GA&N, p. 121-169). Le propos est ambitieux. En voulant «comprendre en philosophe, et non…en doxographe, l'histoire de la philosophie (GA&N, p.122)», Rashed tourne le dos aux ratiocinations de Gouguenheim pour se colleter directement avec deux types de textes rédigés en arabe; les uns sont seulement marqués par un effort original de réflexion, tandis que les autres sont proprement philosophiques. L'ensemble textuel qu'il a choisi d'analyser s'inscrit étroitement dans le cadre de la nouvelle puissance impériale des VIIe-IXe siècles et adopte les normes qui en régulent l'existence. Rashed examine donc tour à tour: Abdallah ibn Mas ud (le thème antéislamique de la prédestination s'infléchit en une réflexion sur le statut de l'acte humain); al-Hasan al-Basri (un débat sur le destin se prolonge en une appréhension des mondes possibles); Abdallah ibn Mu?ammad al-Nashi (le refus des deux infinis aristotéliciens débouche sur l'atomisme); al-Nazzam et Abu al-Hudhayl (qui s'opposent sur leur conception de l'atomisme); Abu Hahim al-Jubba i (la notion ontologique de mode permet de penser en toute rigueur l'unité et les attributs de Dieu); al-Kindi, Thabit ibn Qurra, Abu Bakr al-Razi (tous les trois analysés à partir de l'intérêt qu'ils portent à la cosmologie luxuriante développée dans le Timée: le premier se concentre sur la création du monde et la finitude temporelle; le deuxième, sur la dimension mathématique et le troisième, sur l'aspect biologique et médical). En rompant avec les variantes du platonisme théologisant de ses prédécesseurs, al-Farabi signe au Xesiècle «la fin du concordat entre philosophie et religion révélée (GA&N, p.162)» et revient à une metaphysica generalis pure et dure. Il est évident que les premiers siècles de l'Islam ont connu une réflexion philosophique originale qui a conduit les siècles suivants à prendre vis-à-vis d'Aristote une attitude aussi attentive qu'active. Ne pas s'accorder sur cette lapalissade: si Aristote a été traduit en arabe, c'est bien parce que des Arabes voulaient le lire, l'étudier et le refondre au besoin dans le sens d'une plus grande exigence est un déni de réalité.
