Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. Brandeis, Louis D. [1856-1941]. Lief, Alfred [1901-1971], Editor. The Social and Economic Views of Mr. Justice Brandeis. With a Foreword by Charles A. Beard. New York: The Vanguard Press, [1930]. First edition. xxi, 419 pp. Publisher's black cloth. Deckle edges. Worn and soiled. Hinges cracked, but holding. Number… stamp to rear free endpaper, otherwise internally clean. Tattered dust jacket laid in. A good copy. $85. * First edition. This volume includes selections from his significant opinions delivered while serving as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. It also features material from his career as a prominent lawyer and public advocate before his judicial appointment, providing context for the views he later expressed from the bench. The work considers how Brandeis's legal and social principles applied to the modern development of society, particularly concerning industrial and economic situations. An insightful anonymous contemporary review in the Boston Transcript notes: "The papers are primarily the work of a great lawyer. His work is considered to have a tremendous effect upon not only the body of law already assimilated and codified but also upon the law which is being called into being in response in response to the modern development of society, particularly as regards the industrial situation." Boston Transcript, November 22, 1930, cited in Marke, A Catalogue of the Law Collection at New York University(1953) 1061.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Vanguard Press, New York. 1930. 419 pages with index. First edition, first printing. Original rare DJ with $4.50 price intact on flap. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Book is near fine with only a slight scuff on front pan…el near bottom corner. Pages and endpapers are clean. A neatly written previous owner's name and 1933 date, written near gutter of front pastedown. DJ shows a half-inch by one-inch open chip on spine, with chipping along crown. Minor light soiling and sunning elsewhere. A beautiful copy of the first edition, first printing in its rare, original DJ. In regard to Justice Brandeis, aside from legendary justice status, he is best remembered as a champion of social reform, legal innovation, and a Zionist lion, whose concepts of free speech and privacy still resonate today. These are his thoughts on society in general, along with his economic views. NF/VG.
