Condizione: New. Hardback 600 pages, approx. 1650 colour colour photographs & contemporary BW-photographs and illustrations. In August 1914, Belgium suddenly made the newspaper headlines when Imperial Germany, forgetting its international commitments, invaded the little country, thereby violating its neutral status. Britain retaliated by declaring war. Like Serbia, Poor Little Belgium became a cause worth defending and gave legitimacy to the conflict that the allied nations entered into. In military terms, the Belgian army surprised the entire world by resisting with greater vigour than expected. With their modest resources (230,000 men), the Belgian armed forces, cornered as they were in a small and partly inundated scrap of territory, succeeded in fighting off the enemy for the duration of the war, and managed to join forces with the allies in the offensive of Autumn 1918. Belgium, a victim of crippling destruction and the systematic dismantling of its industry, was accordingly afforded priority in its entitlement for compensation when the peace treaties were signed. This volume of 600 pages (with more than 1,650 colour and black-and-white photographs) is dedicated to the uniforms and equipment used by the Belgian army and other affiliated armed forces such as the garde civique and the force publique in the Belgian Congo. The bibliographic data known to us to date on this subject is limited, representing no more than a set of articles and brochures brought together over the period of a century. This work, unprecedented in its comprehensiveness, can therefore be considered an excellent reference tome. It is based on the extensive collections on display in the Belgian Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and of Military History. Supplementary private collections have been the source of many other objects in order to provide as much illustrative material as possible for this publication. Like many small states in 1914, the Kingdom of Belgium had an army that absorbed and blended influences from the major powers, drawing inspiration from both France (uniforms) and Germany (equipment). Budgetary necessity meant that uniforms had to be simplified for the infantry (line infantry, chasseurs a pied, carabiniers, etc.), the cavalry (guides, lancers, chasseurs a cheval, etc.), the artillery and the engineering corps, leaving very few distinctive features - except some extremely outdated forms of headdress - to distinguish between the different arms. When stocks ran out, this striving to achieve uniformity culminated in the issuance of khaki uniforms in 1915. They were cut to a common pattern inspired by British styling. A new headdress, the French Adrian helmet, was introduced shortly afterwards. The circumstances of this war meant that the provenance of the basic materials and equipment was diverse, with France, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Argentina and the United States supplying material for objects that have now become scarce in existing collections.Overseas clients please note: Due to excessively high wrapped weight shipping is weighted on this title. Couverture rigide. Condizione: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Autriche 2020. 1 Volume/1. -- Neuf -- Reliure éditeur cartonnée sous jaquette illustrée. Format in-4°( 29,5 x 26 cm )(.3500 gr ). ---------- 416 pages , 1200 illustrations. Condizione: New. Hardback, 512 pages, Illustrated To write about the history of firearms without mentioning the reputation of the Belgian firearms industry would be ignoring the important place this country held in the field. The quantity and variety of weapons produced in Belgium and exported during the XIXth century was exceptional. The production tool, but also the know-how and the ingenuity of the gunsmiths were naturally put at the service of the Belgian Army. Modest in numbers, the army disposed in 1914 of a decent individual armament, even if its concept was twenty years old. Well trained, the soldier could exploit to its maximum the long range precision of his weapon. However, the small numbers of automatic weapons, recently purchased, would prove a serious handicap when vastly outnumbered by the enemy. The battle for the Ijzer, saving a small portion of the national territory, saw the end of the war of manoeuvring. The war years saw the government and the rear echelons multiply their efforts and ingenuity to insure the soldier in the front line was correctly armed. On top of numerous adaptations to existing material, there was a large diversification in the origins of the equipment fielded. Photographs of the Belgian front allow the identification of weapons from France, the United Kingdom, United States as well as Germany and Turkey amongst others, weapons used as built or modified to suit the needs of the army.Overseas clients please note: Due to excessively high wrapped weight shipping is weighted on this title. Couverture rigide. Condizione: Comme neuf. Edition originale. Autriche 2020. 1 Volume/1. -- New -- Hardback quarto size ( 29,5 x 26 cm )(.3500 gr ). ---------- 416 pages , 1200 illustrations. ********************** "" The Belgians in the Austrian Habsburg Army of the 18th century seem to have been completely forgotten. They enjoyed a very great reputation, however, and their numbers included seventeen field-marshals and about fifty generals. Belgian units were identified as such: they were called Walloon , recruited in the Low Countries . There were five infantry regiments, the free corps, a regiment of cavalry, artillery and engineers, a real embryo of a complete national army. These units distinguished themselves during the Seven Years War (1756-1763) against Frederick II s Prussians. The Austrian victories of Kolin, Hochkirch, Domstadtl and Adelsbach, among others, were due in large part to them. Against revolutionary France, the national regiments - as they were called in the Austrian Netherlands - were notably engaged at Neerwinden, Valenciennes, Fleurus, Wurzburg, Stockach, Trebbia and Marengo. Beyond the glorifying historiography of the 19th century, the archives and the testimonies of their opponents confirm their value and professionalism. The Belgian contribution was also intellectual, which was never sufficiently recognised. Prince Charles-Joseph de Ligne, as we know, was arguably the most important Austrian military thinker of the 18th century, but many other Flemish, Walloon and Brussels officers were employed by the Habsburg army for their talents as tacticians, engineers, draftsmen or cartographers. There was a Belgian specificity related to the advanced education and material prosperity of the Netherlands within the multiple possessions of the Habsburgs. This book tells the story of all these unjustly forgotten men in a completely new way, drawing not only on first-hand sources but also on an iconography never collected before. This is all the more valuable because the Austrian monarchy did not subsidise many battle paintings , as was done in France. Nor, unlike Prussia, did it see to it that uniforms of its armies were preserved. The Royal Museum of the Army and Military History in Brussels, however, holds a large amount of material, printed and manuscript evidence from that period: it is all on display in this book. The castles of Belgium, in particular the Château Beloeil, have authorized the reproduction of their family treasures: portraits, colour battle plans, weapons, pieces of equipment and uniforms. The University of Namur holds in its library two collections of ancient works relating to Charles-Joseph de Ligne, field marshal and writer. The Museum of Military History in Vienna joined the adventure with other Austrian, Belgian, Luxembourg and German institutions to make this book a veritable catalogue of collectibles and the most complete pictorial sum on the powerful Habsburg army in the second half of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
