Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Myths reflect, reinforce, and sometimes subvert gender ideologies and so have an influence in the 'real world'. This is true in the present no less than when the Greek and Roman myths were created. The struggles to redefine gender roles and identities in our own time are inevitably reflected in our interpretations and retellings of these classical myths. Using the new lenses provided by gender studies and the diverse forms of feminism, Lillian Doherty re-examines some of the major approaches to myth interpretation in the twentieth century: psychological, ritualist, 'charter', structuralist and folklorist. 'Popular' uses of classical mythology, from television and comic books to the evocation of goddesses in Jungian psychology, are also explored.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A guide to teaching the Odyssey through contemporary questions and approaches Famous for its charactersthe clever, unscrupulous Odysseus; the resilient, proud Penelope; and their young son, Telemachus, beginning his own life's journeysthe Odyssey is also well known as a set of fantastic tales and as a reflection of the ethos of Bronze Age Greece. This volume will help instructors introduce students to topics such as oral epic traditions, the Iliad, and kinship structures. It grapples directly with issues that concern instructors and students today, from the epic's rebarbative value system and cultural norms to its violence, slavery, and misogyny. Essays employ feminism, postcolonialism, and popular culture such as television, games, and comics and address a wide range of classrooms, from world literature courses to high schools and a prison. Readers will also learn about teaching interpretations of the Odyssey by writers from Dante to contemporary American poets. This volume contains discussion of Dante's Inferno, Homer's Iliad, Linda Pastan's "On Re-reading the Odyssey in Middle Age," and Theocritus's "The Cyclops." A lively guide for educators reinterpreting an ancient epic through modern lenses. It examines memorable figures and enduring themes by exploring oral traditions, kinship structures, and contentious cultural norms like violence and misogyny, while bridging classic texts with contemporary pop culture.
