Music folio of spirituals and folk songs in African American dialect (hers, actually) which she thought she heard growing up in the upstate region of South Carolina in the 1880s. She later composed such songs and other ethnic material (Hindu, Middle Eastern, Asian), as part of vast array of musical material (400 pieces). Here her mother helps with lyrics (which of them decided on 'you bedder walk mo' ot dah's er whoopin' comin' yo way?), etc. Studied at forerunner to Julliard School in New scholarship in 1905. Strickland composed works that were used in the silent cinema, art song, and solo piano works. As an early ethnomusicologist, she chronicled her experiences with several musical cultures as a special correspondent for The Music Courier. Her articles include those on Ceylon, music at Hindu Temples, "Natuch" dancing, snake charmers "devil dancing", Tibetan Buddhist music, , and music related to Krishna. She also published several similar articles in The Etude, and was featured in Etude magazine about her own compositions, 34pps, some smudges, taped along bottom edge. Quite rare.

It's notable to see Lily Strickland's poetry highlighted and set to music by another composer, as Strickland was better known as a composer herself; receiving a scholarship to the Institute of Musical Arts (later Julliard) and being awarded an honorary doctorate from Converse College in recognition of her accomplishments as a composer. According to *OCLC*, Strickland republished this song a year later in 1948 with her own musical setting; this version, with music by Louise Vairin, is unrecorded by *OCLC* and appears to be equally scarce in the trade.

George Volck, a motion picture and Hollywood agent who was probably pitching this story to Lester Cowan, the addressee and an independent film producer in the 1930s and 1940s. He also sent a carbon copy of a 4-page synopsis of the story which, according to Volck's letter, was told in 293 pages. A half-hearted search turned up nothing to suggest that any play or motion picture was ever produced. OCLC lists this "dramatic cantata" as being held by one institution. (U of Texas).
