The book carefully documents how the Nazis took severe measures against Leo, a Christian minister, because of his Jewish lineage. This eventuated in his incarceration in Buchenwald concentration camp before he was able to flee Germany as an exile to the United States. His escape from Germany was mediated through a refugee camp in the Netherlands and emigration to the US through the sponsorship of his colleague and friend Otto Piper, on the faculty of Princeton Theological Seminary. The story of Paul Leo in America includes his teaching at Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, pastorates in southern Texas, and professorship at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. This book highlights the teaching and scholarly publications by Leo and his marriage to the accomplished artist Eva (Dittrich) Leo.

Dem Autor ist es gelungen, eine exemplarische regionalgeschichtliche Forschungsleistung vorzulegen. Ihre Bedeutung wird noch dadurch erhà ht, daà er den Blick vielfach in die Weite richtet und den begrenzten Rahmen, wie er durch den unmittelbaren Gegenstand gezogen wird, auf den Gesamthorizont der Kirchenkampfauseinandersetzungen hin überwindet. Dabei hat er die Mühen jahrelanger Archivarbeit nicht gescheut, eine Unmasse an primärer und sekundärer Literatur bewältigt, sich aber auch vor Zeitzeugenbefragungen nicht gescheut. Seine Akribie, z.B. bei der Rekonstruktion abgelegener Biographien, ist vorbildlich. [.]" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Das erste Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts stellte die Pastoren der beiden ev.-luth. Kirchengemeinden Osnabrücks vor die Aufgabe, immer neue Modernisierungsziele von Gemeindeleben und kirchlicher Tätigkeit zu erreichen. Zugleich erodierte die kirchliche Bindung der bürgerlichen Mittelschicht - der Gottesdienstbesuch lag 1930 bei 3% -, und die aktive Kirchlichkeit der Industriearbeiter brach mit dem ersten Weltkrieg sogar và llig weg. Die Pastoren waren also im Wesentlichen auf sich selbst gestellt und suchten die Anforderungen durch Vernetzung untereinander zu erfüllen. Tatsächlich konnten auf diese Weise trotz des Wegbrechens von Volkskirchlichkeit zwischen 1910 und 1930 eine Reihe sozialer Projekte, BaumaÃnahmen und sogar die Gründung einer neuen Kirchengemeinde auf den Weg gebracht werden. Als 1933 teils direkt von der NSDAP, teils über die Kirchenpartei "Deutsche Christen" versucht wurde, Zugriff auf die Kirchenvorstände und andere kirchliche Leitungsorgane zu erhalten, lavierten alle Osnabrücker Pastoren bis Ende 1933, um sich dann zu teilen. Einige erfüllten bis 1945 konsequent die im Raum stehende Forderung nach Rückzug von jeglicher à ffentlichkeitswirksamer Tätigkeit. Die Ãbrigen stellten sich diesem Anspruch des nazifizierten sozialen Umfelds entgegen. Besonders erfolgreich war dabei die Clique der ev.-luth. Pastoren Hans Bodensieck, Julius von Loewenfeld, Hans Bornschein und Friedrich GruÃendorf. Diese Pastoren hatten schon in den Jahren und Jahrzehnten zuvor das Agieren über Netzwerke eingeübt, worauf sie nun zurückgriffen. Ihr Erfolg ermunterte sie dazu, sich 1934-1935 auch zu bemühen, auÃerhalb Osnabrücks im kirchenpolitischen oppositionellen Feld ("Bekennende Kirche") mitzuwirken; die Clique konnte sich als einzige Opposition gegen die nazifizierte Leitung der ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannover etablieren. Da die Kirchengemeinden die Aktivitäten ihrer Pastoren jedoch nicht mittrugen und das soziale Umfeld sowie die Kirchenleitung den Pastoren das Leben dauerhaft schwer machten, zerfiel die Clique seit 1936, und auch die Bekenntnispfarrer beschränkten sich seitdem auf ein Minimum pastoraler Tätigkeit. Bd. 1 enthält eine ausführliche Darstellung der Strukturen der Osnabrücker ev.-luth. Kirchengemeinden im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts. Anhand von drei Schwerpunkten wird die Herausbildung und Etablierung des Systems von Nähe und Distanz der Pastoren, also deren Vernetzung, in Hinblick auf die jeweils konkrete Wirksamkeit vor 1933 untersucht. Bd. 2 erà rtert, auf welche Weise sich die Osnabrücker Bekenntnispfarrer seit 1933 Freiräume zu erhalten suchten. Sie wurden in Osnabrück und im Bereich der Hannoverschen Landeskirche sehr bekannt und beeinflussten bis 1936 den kirchenpolitischen Kurs der Lan.
