Thomas Moran (1837 - 1926) was an American painter and printmaker, best known for his expansive landscapes of the American West. Born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, Moran moved to Philadelphia with his family when he was seven. He apprenticed as a wood engraver but soon pursued a career in painting. Moran became widely recognized for his work during the 1871 Hayden Geological Survey of Yellowstone, where his vivid depictions helped promote the creation of Yellowstone National Park. In addition to providing general biographical information, Lindstrom's lecture focuses on Moran's visits to Utah and highlights how his work in the region contributed to his broader artistic legacy. Moran's sketches and paintings of Utah's natural wonders, such as the Green River and the Canyonlands, are discussed in detail. Lindstrom's lecture also emphasizes the lasting impact of Moran's works on the cultural and historical perceptions of the American West during the late 19th century.
