Various types of pollutants and emerging new diseases not only disrupt the normal course of life, but also above this some of the atmospheric pollutants are most likely involved in the changing climate. We fear and literally shiver at the thought that the 'changing climate' would ultimately disrupt the fragile thermodynamic equilibrium between the atmosphere and the oceans. Are we insensitive to these facts to the point of pushing our descendants, some genera tions ahead, into a new glacial period after a first period of warming up, at least, in northern Europe, like the one that took place 13 to 14 millennia ago Surely the planet's nature is not prepared to be dominated by man and will go its way, whether humanity will be alive or dead.

Allerdings ist diese bestenfalls schizophrene AttitUde gera de in Kreisen der Umweltforscher zu einem betrachtlichen Teil den Sozialwissen schaften se1bst anzulasten, welche den messenden, bohrenden, bastelnden, explo rierenden und programmierenden Tatmenschen aus den physikalischen, geologi schen und biologischen Ziinften geme die erdschweren Felder der Natur iiberlas sen, urn sich der siiBen Kontemplation in den Spharen der Gesellschaftskultur hinzugeben. Die vorliegende Monographie beweist, daB es so nicht sein mull und daB es so nicht bleiben wird. Nachdem ich nunmehr meiner (durch Dberzeugung erleichterten) Pflicht zu - benden, wenn nichl erbaulichen Worten nachgekommen bin, mochte ich einige (wenige) Gedanken zum Thema 'Umweltgerechtigkeit' selbst beisteuern. Diese Gedanken finden sich teilweise auch in meinem Buch zur Erdsystemanalyse', das den Versuch untemimmt, eine 'mathematische Ethik' der Nachhaltigkeil zu for mulieren. Oer damit verbundene Anspruch ist iibrigens so hoch, wie er klingt.
