Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Fine. Softcover. Lisa Kokin is a well-known visual artist and book artist who also creates art with sewing and alterations, as well as with button work and assemblage. She also is known for acting as a mentor and coach to people in the arts. Her work is in collections across the U.S. She writes about her work: "One-of-a-kind books have played a major role in my work since the 1990s, and I find that I go back to making books in between working in other formats. Each time I return to books I try to invent a new way of working and a fresh approach. Making books gives me a feeling of comfort, perhaps because I grew up with them and reading is an important part of my life. 'Bookscrapping' began in 2024 when I started to play with the many scraps and 'failed' pieces lying around my studio. I have always been interested in fragments, both for their metaphorical associations and for the way that new compositions appear independent of my control. In this way, chance plays a major role in the work. Pieces want to be joined and I am the vehicle for their joining. I know that sounds a bit mystical, but that is the way the process goes, on a good day. CONAsemic text, flags, and oblique social commentary are present in the work despite the absence of actual text. Things are falling apart domestically and globally, and many people are worried. 'Bookscrapping' is a method of joining disparate parts to form wholes, a kind of hopeful metaphor for our troubled times. And, of course, it is a pun on scrapbooking. I can never resist a good (or bad) pun." Turbulence is one of the largest pieces in the Bookscrapping series, and one I consider to be the magnum opus of the series. Made solely of pompoms, pompom trim, thread and synthetic industrial felt, the piece is an abstract evocation of the current political moment. I wanted to make a book that viewers would need their whole upper body to "operate," and thus be engaged in a physical, as well as a cerebral and emotional way. I was specifically looking at photographs of children wrapped in body bags. Although my intention was noble, the piece went nowhere. However, cut up, reassembled and combined with other scraps and pieces of fabric, they were much more successful. The title is a reflection on displacement." Mixed fiber book, 24 x 18.5 x2 inches.…

By accident one day, my spouse who does all my technology work, pressed the wrong button and AI spit out a reassembled version of one of my pieces. I thought, 'wow, this could be a new way of working for me!' I set about working from the scrambled image, but soon saw how wrong I was. I had absolutely no emotional connection to the work. So I did what I often do, which is to cut up the failed piece and combine it with another piece that didn't quite work to create something that resonated because it was actually made by me and not a robot." Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Fine. Unique. Signed by the artist. (40)ff. Found photographs and text are sewn together in order to speak to speaking itself. The photographs all show women's faces, in each instance somehow manipulated, fragmented, or otherwise distortedâ"essentially silenced. Each one concludes an aphorism on "correct" speech, from "The Central Idea" to "Story" to "Combinations," all of which articulate assumptions of rightness and etiquette (and subservience) that condition women's voices in politics, the workplace, and daily life. The alternative, as stated in the first section, is violence: "Almost all normal persons will dominate or kill because of fear." The fear is, of course, that women might be correct after all. Kokin suggests a solution at her final section, "Never Read Poetry," by which, of course, she means the opposite; read, and write, poetry in order to address the unspoken and unspeakable. A playful and profound approach, bound in wrappers and held in found lozenge tin. Fine.…

Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Fine. Unique, signed by the artist. Square octavo. (17)ff. Kokin's wary glimpse at the social conditioning of children into a state of compliance, and the quashing of youthful self-expression, is made from tapes of various kinds (including, fittingly, "duck") and found photographs and objects. The stickiness of the tapes creates obvious friction between the pages, haptically evoking the frictive and constrained experience of being a child in a bifurcated country, where you either fit in or you don't. The final page sums up the concern and its problematic results. A sheet reads, "You may play this game. Who will be the policeman? Who will be the lost child?" Throughout the rest of the volume, cropped images of children along with found text and scraps of educational paraphernalia - among which are a jigsaw puzzle, a lettering stencil, and math problems - reinforce the point. Of course, now the title evokes that other distressing fear around an American childhood, school shootings. Bound in duct tape wrappers with binder rings. Housed in sheet metal box with wooden toy duck affixed to the lid. Fine.…

Aggiungi al carrelloNo binding. Condizione: Fine. Unique. Signed by the artist. (18)ff. A structured, sutured collage of found text and images, Kokin's stitched portrait of American middle class life reflects its anxieties and its capitulations to normativity. The volume begins by stating that "in the suburbs anesthesia is possible," summing up the argument that the engine of American power and capitalism feeds upon the "dream" of white-picket-fence comfort. Images of children, couples, and architecture are bordered by American flag stamps, themselves an ironical seal of approval of what those images depict. The result is a brilliant, and unsettling, address of the passivity which bleeds into submission to the will of those in power - a distinctly American experience. Housed in a found needle box. Fine.…
