Condizione: leichte Gebrauchsspuren. a few marks The "Oxford School Shakespeare" is a well-established series which helps students understand and enjoy Shakespeare's plays. As well as the complete and unabridged text, each play in this series has an extensive range of students' notes. These include detailed and clear explanations of difficult words and passages, a synopsis of the plot, summaries of individual scenes, and notes on the main characters. Also included is a wide range of questions and activities for work in class, together with the historical background to Shakespeare's England, a brief biography of Shakespeare, and a complete list of his plays. This topical and relevant play is a new addition to the "Oxford School Shakespeare". The text follows the redesign of the series, photographs of recent stage productions have been included, and the attractive cover design follows the revised series style. Roma Gill, the series editor, has taught Shakespeare at all levels. She has acted in and directed Shakespeare's plays, and has lectured on Shakespeare all over the world. Hard Back. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First American Edition. 372 Pages plus a Comprehensive Eighteen page Index. Maroon boards with gold lettering on the spine. Top page edges are maroon. There is a gold decoration on the front board with the authors initials. Previous owner's name on an ex libris label on the front endpaper. No other defects noted to this otherwise as new condition book. The dust jacket is bit tattered around the edges but is complete with flaps. Jacket price is $3.75. This work by the distinguished British historian contains studies of the memoirs of Mme de Motteville, La Grande Mademoiselle, Burnet, Saint-Simon, Wilhelmina of Prussia, Lord Hervey, Horace Walpole, Fanny Burney, Mme Campan, Mme de Remusat, Queen Hortense, Caulaincourt, and Mme Adam, whose testimony illuminates the history of Europe from Richelieu to Bismarck. That eight are French, four are English, and one is German illustrates the fact that in this fascinating field France occupies the first place, England the second, and Germany the third. The experiences, impressions, and verdicts of authors who have lived so close to the heart of events, while needing to be cautiously used, are indispensable to the personal side of history and to the recapture of the atmosphere of their time. The writers selected for treatment are of importance less for what they did than for what they saw and heard and felt. The book is designed mainly for readers without time or inclination for or access to the original works, some of them of considerable length; and for this reason copious quotations are supplied. The author's purpose is rather to stimulate than to satisfy healthy appetites, and some readers, it is hoped, may be tempted to follow up the clues provided in the brief bibliographies.
