Naked, with long hair and his face gaudily madeup, Chinese artist Ma Liuming found his artistic cipher in a male body with a feminine face, a peculiarity that gave rise to the hermaphrodite character that he has constantly "played" throughout his career that began during the 1990s in China. This book traces the years of his first performances in the Beijing East Village to the most recent works. Libro.

Signed catalog from Ma Liuming's ten-year retrospective exhibition. Supplementary text includes an interview conducted by Tang Xin and critical essay by Caroline Puel, with all text translated in French, English and Chinese. After two months imprisonment, Ma Liuming was released to critical celebrity in the Chinese art world and was subsequently invited to their first show outside of China at the 1996 Tokyo International Performance Art Festival. Ma Liuming challenged inherited censorship in cultural presentation, mainly in how the human body is portrayed in art with most of their work with self-depiction of their nude form in different landscapes held in high esteem in Chinese history. They also would paint their face atop the bodies of infants. Ma Liuming continues to do painting, photography and performance art. Very Good, light shelf and handling wear includes rubbing to wraps and lightly frayed corners. Perfect-bound in pictorial wraps with french flaps, 7 1/4" x 9 3/8", 160 p.
