"William Macewen (1848-1924), Victor Horsley (1857-1916), and Francesco Durante (1845-1934) are well-recognized pioneers of brain surgery. There were, however, other less recognized workers in this new specialty. While it is commonly believed that surgery of the nervous system was perfected and introduced as a specialty in the first decade of this century by the American Harvey Cushing (1869-1939), it should be noted that there were many pioneers in central Europe and in the Nordic countries. Wilhelm Wagner (1848-1900) from Konigshutte in Upper Silesia was the inventor of the osteoplastic flap so necessary for exploration of the brain. Vilhelm Magnus (1871-1929) from Oslo worked in parallel with and quite independently from the great American neurosurgeons; his operative results in no way fell short of Cushing's. Magnus' impressions of American neurosurgery in the year 1928 are included in this book. This book is aimed at neuroscientists with an interest in the lives and accomplishments of some pioneers in neurology and surgical neurology as well as the lives and accomplishments (good or bad) of some of their more renowned patients. 1 also have taken the liberty to include a more unusual case of a foreign body introduced into the brain with a survey of the literature on this matter (see Chapter 9). Permission to reproduce excerpts from previously published articles was kindly granted by the publishers of Surgical Neurology (Chapters 1, 6, 8, 9), British Journal of Neurosurgery (Chapter 2), Journal of Neurosurgery (Chapter 5), and Neurosurgery (Chapter 7). I had great help during many years from innumerable persons all over the world. There are some who I would specifically like to mention: my German colleague Michael Buchfelder (Chapter 1), my colleagues Harald Fodstad and Kristian Kristiansen from Norway, lb Sbgaard from Denmark and Tapio Torma from Finland (Chapter 2), my Swedish colleagues Bo Norrving and Ido Leden (Chapter 4), Ms. Anne Waugh and Ms. Birgitta Ermstahl, who offered excellent secretarial work, and last but not least, my brother Magnus Ljunggren (all chapters and especially Chapters 3 and 4)." Preface.
