Edward Hawke Locker was responsible for the formation of the Naval Gallery housed in the Painted Hall of Greenwich Hospital, and was active in securing many of the donated pictures. With this work it was his intention to produce a history of the Royal Navy in biographical form, but due to ill health only, this, the first of a planned four volumes was completed. Comprises sixteen biographies, and description of four actions, each with a plate. Included are Blake, Rooke, Benbow, James Cook and Collinwood, actions include the Armada, Ushant and the Nile. Most of the plates have a degree of foxing, mostly light and medium, with one severe. Recently library bound in blue buckram with reinforced hinges, however there are no library stamps. A good working copy, and priced accordingly, of a scarce book.

Covering topics such as history, prophecy and retrospective views on the teachings of the Bible. Edward Hawke Locker (1777-1849) was an English watercolourist (producing works now in the V&A and British Museum) and administrator of the Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich. The lectures in this book were delivered on board HMS Culloden whilst Locker served in the Navy. In a half-calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some rubbing to the boards and some wear to the extremities (particularly the head of the spine). Wear to joints. Internally, firmly bound. Front endpapers missing. Pages are age-toned with some scattered spotting throughout. Loss to pages 127-128, not affecting the text. Good. book.
