This book presents images taken in Brazil's Amazon Basin, in a fishing village on the island of Visio and among the rubber-trappers along the river Madeira. Focusing on a balance between composing to bring out certain aspects in her subjects and capturing the natural relationships of people in their own surroundings, Lockhart's photographs explore an interesting mixture of narrative and documentary. Essays by Timothy Martin and Karel Schampers look at the photos in the context of her previous work and the anthropological significance of her working methods." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Documentary theater, by Timothy Martin; Aripuana River Region: interview locations; Aripuana River Region: family photographs; Apeu-Salvador: families; Apeu-Salvador: Maria da Conceicao Pereira de Souza with the fruits of the island; At the edge of my seat: Teatro Amazonas, by Ivone Margulies. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 112 pages. Catalogue of the exhibition of the Massachusetts-born and Los Angeles-based photographer; at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, March - September 2001. Sponsor's statement by C. Steven McMillan; foreword by Robert Fitzpatrick; essays by Molon and Bryson. Slight rubbing to covers; else a near fine copy.Over 100 Color Photographs. // 'Sharon Lockhart's photographs and films frame the quiet moments and details of everyday life, exploring the subtle relationships between photography and cinema. Much of her photographic work over the past six years has relied on the staging of scenes characteristic of filmmaking; her work has also treated issues of time, sequence and narrative in a style reminiscent of Conceptual art. Lockhart's films emphasize the photographic basis of the moving image, often using a fixed perspective to capture unexpected movements and human reactions in a given situation. This catalogue documents the largest and most significant solo exhibition of Lockhart's work in an American museum to date, and focuses on Lockhart's photographic and cinematic work since 1994, including her major film projects Goshogaoka (1997) and Teatro Amazonas (1999). Also featured are essays by curator Dominic Molon and art historian Norman Bryson, focusing on Lockhart's rereading of conceptual photography, and her complex approach to narrative and the gaze.' -- publisher.

Created over the course of three years in a small town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, Pine Flat is Sharon Lockhart's fi rst project to center on a community in the United States. Working without a film crew so that she could better immerse herself in the life of the town, Lockhart has created a formally concise yet exceptionally intimate view of contemporary rural life that focuses on the interactions of the community's children, who engage in everyday activities in stunningly beautiful natural landscapes. The book-conceived as a companion work to the film, sound, and photographic components that comprise the project- includes stills and a series of nineteen large-format portraits inspired in part by the 19th-century American tradition of the portrait photographer. Although remarkably personal, these images transcend individual specificity to approach the status of archetypes, evoking a wide range of art historical references, from Edouard Manet to August Sander.
