Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Book.

Woodcut printer's device of Cornelio Arrivabene (Time as an angel about to drink from a pit and the motto "pria che le labbra bagnerai la fronte", inviting to be cautious and not to be driven by haste ). Several woodcut historiated initials, head- and tail-pieces, and woodcut illustrations of chess pieces, followed by paragraphs describing their origin and history. Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine (lightly stained and soiled). Manuscript ownership entry from monastery of Santa Giustina in Padua. Restoration to the outer margin of title page not affecting the text, some light browning, but overall a good, genuine copy. First italian edition. Printed in Venice in 1584 by Cornelio Arrivabene, Il giuoco degli scacchi represents the first edition in Italian of one of the most foundational texts in the history of international chess literature. The work is a direct translation of the Spanish treatise Libro de la invención liberal y arte del juego del axedrez, originally written by the Spanish priest Ruy López de Segura and published in Alcalá de Henares in 1561. Prompted by a 1560 journey to Rome, where he defeated the top Italian players but grew deeply dissatisfied with the quality of existing manuals, López composed his treatise to systematically re-evaluate the game. Divided into four comprehensive parts, his work introduced foundational tactical principles, formulated early opening theories (including his world-famous namesake opening, the "Ruy Lopez or Spanish Opening"), and provided a critical analysis of earlier master games. The author, Ruy López de Segura (c. 1530?c. 1580), was a Catholic priest from Zafra and a favorite courtier of King Philip II of Spain, who highly patronized his extraordinary chess skills. López is widely recognized by historians as the first unofficial chess world champion, celebrated for elevating chess from a courtly pastime into a rigorous intellectual science. This 1584 Italian translation was executed by Giovanni Domenico Tarsia (M. Gio. Domenico Tarsia), a versatile scholar and prolific translator active in the vibrant Venetian publishing industry. By translating López's technical Spanish prose into the elegant Italian linguistic idiom of the late Renaissance, Tarsia made these advanced Iberian tactical theories accessible to the elite academic and courtly circles of Northern Italy. Published in a neat quarto format with a distinctive printer's mark, Arrivabene's edition stands as an exceptional material artifact documenting the early modern globalization of tactical sports, cross-cultural translation practices, and the deep historical roots of modern chess theory Italian Union Catalogue, IT\ICCU\UMCE\036334; Edit 16, CNCE29870. . Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. [vi]+214+[i] pages with chessboard illustration, 6 chess pieces as text vignettes and many decorated woodcut initials. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in later vellum with brown label to spine in gilt lettering. Translated from the Spanish by G. Domenicus Tarsia. (Schmid p. 236 ff. L/N 372. van der Linde I, 348) First Italian edition, first state with gomito, Gobito and Gombito on lines 1, 3 and 6 on page 133 whereas the later variant has consistent spelling "gomito" (elbow). First Italian edition of the original Spanish edition by G. Domenicus Tarsia, extremely rare. This Italian translation is a somewhat free adaptation, which was enhanced with woodcuts. Selenus edited the main content of his chess work from the printed Italian translation. His textbook contains the rules of the game, strategies and openings. He preferred the Bishop game, especially "the Gambit des Lopez" and the King's Gambit. Lopez is considered the "father of chess theory" since he was the first to explain his moves. An important and detailed assessment can be found at Schmid on pages 231 to 240. Adriano Chicco, together with Giorgio Porreca, gives advice on the various prints of the Italian first edition. Ruy López de Segura was a Spanish chess player, author, and Catholic priest whose 1561 treatise Libro de la invención liberal y Arte del juego del Axedrez was one of the first books about modern chess in Europe. He made great contributions to chess opening theory. In 1559, while living in Zafra, López was called to Rome by Pope Pius IV on ecclesiastical business. During his stay in Rome, López played chess with the locals. He apparently acquitted himself well, although the only account of these games is given in a single sentence by López himself. One of those players was Il Puttino, an epithet for a young Leonardo di Bona. López also learned the term gambit from the Italian players. In Italy López encountered Pedro Damiano's treatise on chess, Questo libro e da imparare giocare a scachi et de li partiti, and did not find much value in it. This may have inspired López to write his own book, Libro de la Invencion liberal y Arte del juego del Axedrez, which was published in 1561. Condition: Boards slightly bowed, some light foxing else very good.
