This text covers every injury to the bone marrow which can occur from low and high doses of ionizing radiation - for example, X-rays, gamma-rays and especially damaging types of radiation such as alpha-rays. Dr. Hendry has been Director, MSc Course in Radiation Biology, Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology and Biology, University of Oxford, UK (2008-10); Radiation Biologist (2002-07) and Head (2005-07) of the Section of Applied Radiation Biology and Radiotherapy, Division of Human Health, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, IAEA, Vienna; Head for 25 years of the Radiobiology Department, later the Section of Genome Damage & Repair, and then the Experimental Radiation Oncology Group, at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, Christie Hospital, Manchester, UK (to 2002). Dr. Lord was also at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, Christie Hospital. Individual chapters describe normal haemopoiesis and radiation exposure levels from natural and man-made sources; the effects of different qualities of radiation on the bone marrow and its treatments; and leukaemia induction after low doses of natural or man-made radiations. The book concludes with a chapter on human epidemiological studies of radiation leukeaemogenesis, including the incidences of leukaemia in populations exposed to the atomic bombs in Japan in World War II, residents in areas of high radon concentration, uranium miners, and medically-exposed groups of patients.
