Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. An illustrated guide to the deadly world of espionage. Agents, double agents and multiple agents are vital to waging war successfully and they often help nations avoid war altogether. Spies have affected the outcomes of wars and crucial battles throughout history. Spies exposes the secret successes and public failures of intelligence gathering and operations from ancient times to the current war on terrorism. Using easy-to-follow illustrated case studies and sidebar features, Spies reveals the behind-the-scenes stories of famous spies, international secrets, betrayals and bravery in the long history of spying. The book describes in exciting detail: The art of spy tradecraft Techniques spies use to gather and send secrets Devices used to steal state secrets How agents survive in hostile environments Whether or not spies like James Bond really exist. Today, sophisticated digital and space-based technology gathers untold amounts of raw data. Yet far from rendering the spy on the ground obsolete, human intelligence is more vital than ever to separate the truth from the deception. Spies is a factual and fascinating look into a dangerous world where nothing is what it appears to be. …

Paperback. Condizione: Good. A beautiful photographic celebration of the world's 18 species of penguin. Featuring breathtaking photographs of the world's 18 species of penguin, Mission Penguin takes you to many of the most remote places on earth, from the Falkland and Gal pagos Islands to the Antipodes Islands and Tristan da Cunha. Following the loss of her husband, Ursula Clare Franklin embarked on a personal mission to see and photograph every species of penguin in their natural habitats. The result is a remarkable showcase of penguins - hundreds of striking photographs accompanied by engaging text that details the penguins' features and characteristics. Each chapter explores a new penguin species and details Ursula's spectacular journey to see and photograph these much-loved birds. This astonishing and informative book explores the difficulties all penguins face and how humanity's actions have threatened their very existence. Ursula warns of the devastating effects of climate change and the conservation efforts needed to ensure future generations can continue to experience the joy of penguins. This is a story that will inspire, uplift and educate.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. Look out for David Owen's next book, Where the Water Goes. A challenging, controversial, and highly readable look at our lives, our world, and our future. Most Americans think of crowded cities as ecological nightmares, as wastelands of concrete and garbage and diesel fumes and traffic jams. Yet residents of compact urban centers, Owen shows, individually consume less oil, electricity, and water than other Americans. They live in smaller spaces, discard less trash, and, most important of all, spend far less time in automobiles. Residents of Manhattan--the most densely populated place in North America--rank first in public-transit use and last in percapita greenhouse-gas production, and they consume gasoline at a rate that the country as a whole hasn't matched since the mid-1920s, when the most widely owned car in the United States was the Ford Model T. They are also among the only people in the United States for whom walking is still an important means of daily transportation. These achievements are not accidents. Spreading people thinly across the countryside may make them feel green, but it doesn't reduce the damage they do to the environment. In fact, it increases the damage, while also making the problems they cause harder to see and to address. Owen contends that the environmental problem we face, at the current stage of our assault on the world's nonrenewable resources, is not how to make teeming cities more like the pristine countryside. The problem is how to make other settled places more like Manhattan, whose residents presently come closer than any other Americans to meeting environmental goals that all of us, eventually, will have to come to terms with.…
