Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: New. 2006 reprint by Rediscovery Books SBPublished Price £38 Lord Elgin was an experienced British statesman and diplomat sent to the Far East from 1857-59 in a successful attempt to assert British power after China had seized the British vessel âArrowâ. Elgin occupied the southern Chinese city of Canton and forced a treaty favourable to British interests on China before withdrawing. Elgin moved on to Japan where he negotiated a further treaty opening up the secretive and long secluded island state to European trade. On returning to Britain and learning that the Chinese Emperor had refused to ratify his treaty, Elgin was despatched to China once again, marched on Peking where he burned the Imperial summer palace in reprisal for the Emperorâs recalcitrance. China finally submitted and ratified the treaty. This full, two volume account of Elginâs expeditions is written by Elginâs personal secretary and is remarkable for its observations of the two strongest states in eastern Asia which were to have such a massive impact on subsequent history. Oliphant is lavish in his praise of Japan in contrast to what he views as the oriental obstinacy and untrustworthiness of China. Lavishly illustrated with colour plates, this is a must for anyone interested in China and Japan and the history of the British Empire.

//// 4-page autograph letter, signed A. I. H. Durham (1782-1844), Portsmouth on October 18, 1837, addressed to an unidentified man, in impeccable French. Wife of Sir Philip Charles Calderwood Durham (marriage October 1817), Anne Isabella Henderson was born in Fordell, Fife, Scotland. Her military husband was Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth, when he received a visit from Queen Victoria in the autumn of 1837. She mentions in her letter the arrival of the young Queen (Victoria), and the enthusiastic welcome which she received in Brighton. "She is an unusual person. The presence of mind, the firmness, the decision of character that she shows are very remarkable in such a young woman and portend a very interesting reign." After describing a trip to Scotland, she mentions that Lord Elgin (his deceased daughter was first married to Sir Philip Durham) spent a few days with them and he only talks about homeopathy (she admits that she is incredulous about it). James Bruce (1811-1863), better known as Lord Elgin, was a British colonial administrator and diplomat. He is particularly known as being the governor-general of the colony of United Canada (1847-1854) having established responsible government, but also for having been viceroy of India and for having ordered the destruction of the palace of Summer in China.
