The trilogy follows the lives of the family patriarch Ahmad 'Abd al-Jawad and his family across three generations, in Cairo, Egypt, from 1919, the year of Egyptian Revolution against the British rule in Egypt, to almost the end of the Second World War in 1944. The three novels' Arabic titles are taken from the names of actual streets in Cairo, where major characters in the novels live. The three novels represent three eras of socio-political life, from religious conservative to Marxist radicalism. Palace Walk was first published in Arabic ( Bayn al-Qasrayn) in 1956; Palace of Desire ( Qasr al-Shawq), in 1957; and Sugar Street (Al-Sukkariyya), in 1957. The English translations were first published by Doubleday in 1990, 1991, and 1992, respectively. Palace Walk was translated by William M. Hutchins and Olive Kenny; Palace of Desire by Hutchins, Olive Kenny and Lorne Kenny; and Sugar Street by Hutchins, Olive Kenny and Angele Botros Samaan.
