The author has followed an old French form by stringing together a group of folk -songs with a slight thread of story. The Nativity has been treated in French folklore with intimate simplicity, and the Verses used in the play are, with one exception, translated directly from the originals. Some of the airs were written down as early as the sixteenth century, but together with the verses they date before that time in the unsigned history of the countryside. The play is no more sectarian than the Bible story from which it is drawn, and is therefore adapted to use under the most varied conditions, by public and private schools, churches, Sunday schools, and community organizations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. One of three hundred copies printed by the Yale University Press in December 1923. 16 x 13 inches. Quarter cloth, brown, with Japan-paper boards. Paper label with crisp lettering pasted to front board. A great deal of wear and rubbing and chipping to the binding. All corners bumped. About a half-inch of loss at spine head. Losses and rubbing to the paper label on the spine. Text block very firmly bound in. Discoloration to edges of the front FEPs. Evidence of dampstain to the rear pastedown and rear FEPs but generally not affecting the text pages or the plate pages. With 80 numbered pages and B&W plates. Oddly, a page of text has been bound in between Plates 101 & 102, the text page not pertaining to the book at all. No tears or margin scribblings observed. A Good Minus to Fair Only copy. 7 lbs. weight. This book was reviewed by Burlington magazine in 1924.
