Fait prisonnier à Coïmbra en 1811, il raconte sa vie comme prisonnier des Anglais sur les pontons puis en résidence. Libéré en 1813, il est versé à l'ambulance de la Garde Impériale avec qui il fera les campagnes d'Allemagne et de France.
