Paperback. Condizione: Good. DAME ON THE DOCK In 1922, two bickering gumshoes unite to solve the murder of an heiress. They need to hurry. One loved her, the other never met her, but both look good for the murder. When a well-heeled solicitor offers a substantial retainer to solve the murder of a wealthy industrialist's daughter, investigator Tatum "Shoe" Shoemaker jumps at the chance. He is deep in debt, and if he helps track down the murderer, he could finally earn enough to pay off his creditors. Against the advice of his girlfriend-cum-wise-cracking assistant, Shoe decides to risk potential retribution by elected officials and return to Nevis-the town that ran him out six months earlier for exposing corruption in government. But his hope of solving his new case is immediately imperiled when he learns archrival Rudy Becker has been retained on the same case. Then Rudy dumps the big one on him. Rudy is the illegitimate son of Shoe's philandering father. Begrudgingly, the half-brothers agree to join forces. The investigation gets all the more complicated when Shoe learns that Rudy has been secretly involved with the dead heiress. Thanks to Rudy's amusing habit of signing Shoe's name in various hotel registries when he was with Mena, Shoe is now a prime suspect in the murder. To clear his own name, Shoe realizes he may have to ask his brother to implicate himself, unless they can uncover who really killed the heiress first-and quickly.Clues pile up without connection as neither brother fully trusts the other, and each withholds information vital to solving the case. They must either learn to work with complete trust, or one of them will certainly go down for the murder.…
