Il est aussi devenu un objectif largement reconnu de l'éducation. En tant que phénomène langagier, il bénéficie de la richesse des moyens d'investigation de la linguistique actuelle. Pour cette nouvelle édition, les auteurs ont ajouté dans une postface les développements récents qu'ils jugent les plus pertinents. Ceux-ci enrichissent la réflexion théorique servant de moteur à ce parcours conduisant à des généralisations qui étendent la portée des observations initiales. Ils font de cet ouvrage un accompagnement à l'expérience pratique et réflexive du bi-/plurilinguisme qui concerne un très grand nombre de personnes en Europe et dans le monde.
