XX PREFACE: SEVENTY-TWO members of Congress, representing approximately 18,000,000 people, have signed their names to a petition as indorsers of a definite formula to keep America out of foreign wars, known as the Peace Amendment, which proposes to amend the Constitution of the United States to provide for a referendum vote on war and to take the profit out of war. Twenty-nine other members, representing 7,250,000 more Americans, have pledged their support of the amendment in the next Congress. The twenty-one railroad brotherhoods, comprising a million workingmen, have thrown the strength of their organization back of the proposal. The American War Mothers, who know from cruel experience the meaning of war, have brought their united membership to the support of the amendment. Sixty-five presidents of universities and colleges, vast religious and social organizations, many outstanding men and women in all professions and all walks of life, and millions of the common people, have hailed the proposal as a sane and well-considered plan to keep America out of war. A peace proposal with such a wide appeal, already having the pledged support of 101 members of Congress who are the chosen representatives of over 25,000,000 people; of a great group of workingmen who comprise the flower of organized labor; of the millions of war mothers whose sons fought on European soil and many of whom sleep the eternal sleep under the poppies of France; a proposal that commands the unstinted approval of such organizations as the Church of the Disciples of Christ in international conventions assembled.
