Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. FIRST U. S. EDITION hardcover, sewn-bound in decorative tan cloth (red stamped lettering and decoration on tan cloth on front cover, and faded same on spine) is in FAIR condition, having corners bumped and worn; tiny circular abrasion at bottom of front cover which has removed… corresponing cloth (see photo); as said before red stamping has faded on spine, and there is some darkening; rubbing/scuffing to covers and spine; at back of book are eight pages of advertisements, principally listings of the other books in "The New Art Library Series," of which this is a volume, but there is some tearing to bottom of pages; also, some soiling to the last endpaper section; looks like a much used artist's copy. Book is SIGNED BY PAUL GROESSE in fountain-ink on first free endpaper. Groesse (1906-1987), born in Hungary, was an art director (and production designer) for films, principally at MGM in his earlier years, and then free-lancing. He won three Academy awards for Best Art Direction ("Pride and Prejudice" (1940), "The Yearling" (1946), and "Little Women" (1949), and was nominated for eight films, including "Madame Curie" (1943), "The Music Man" (1962), and "Twilight of Honor" (1963)). Book is illustrated by the author, and also includes many other artist etchings. This book looks to be one of the most thorough ones on the subject, written and often illustrated by Ernest Stephen Lumsden, an etcher and painter, and Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, and includes technical information on the processes. Art. Etching. Intaglio printmaking. DB[3]. Ernest Stephen Lumsden, et al. (illustratore).

First edition (a limited edition of 150 copies with four original etchings by Lumsden was also issued). 376pp., frontispiece and 152 other black and white plates, 55 text illustrations, and 16 pages of advertisements. Ernest Stephen Lumsden (1883-1948) was a distinguished pai…nter, noted etcher and authority on etching. In this book he describes the various techniques of intaglio printing using etching, drypoint, mezzotint and aquatint; and tells the history and development of etching through Rembrandt, Goya and the etching revival; and reproduces personal, illustrated notes from several eminent etchers of the period on their techniques including: Marius Bauer, Frank Benson, Muirhead Bone, George Clausen, David Young Cameron, Frank Short, Augustus John, Frank Brangwyn, James McBey, Edmund Blampied, Percy Smith, Christopher Nevinson, Laura Knight, and John Everett. The book is bound in the original grey-brown cloth covered boards with red titling and decoration on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. The titling on the spine is slightly worn and the spine ends are bumped. There is a thin developing split of about 1/2" in the cloth on the top of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
