Original black-and-white publicity photograph showing actress Lupe Velez who is likely shown in one of her roles as she wears an elegant dress and talks or listens on the phone. Printed on glossy paper. No date, circa 1940s-1950s. 8" x 10." "695-22" is printed in the lower-right corner o…f the photo. Photo is virtually pristine and intact except for a few minuscule scratch marks and slight age toning. A Fine copy. Lupe Velez (1908-1944) was a Mexican actress, dancer, and singer. Velez was part of Hollywood's "Golden Age" and her talent was discovered after people from Hollywood heard of her successful acting career in Mexico. Velez was often typecast as a beautiful "spitfire" and starred in a number of films. Some of the studios she worked with were RKO Radio Pictures, Universal Studios, and Columbia Pictures. Among her notable roles was her recurring portrayal of a fictional character, Carmelia Lindsay, in the eight-movie series, Mexican Spitfire. This film series was significant in that is was the first time a Mexican actress in the United States starred in eight successive movies. Sadly, Velez had a tumultuous personal life and intentionally overdosed on the barbiturate, Seconal.

Printed mimeo snipe on the versos, and one with the stamp of studio photographer Ray Jones on the same. Hijinks and comic misunderstandings abound on a luxury liner headed to…Havana. From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. 8 x 10 inches. Murray (1903-1988), born July 14, 1903, New York City; died October 12, 1988, Burbank, California; America actor; won special Oscar for fantasy film "Bill and Coo" 1944 which he starred and produced; produced vaudeville revue "Ken Murray’s Blackouts" which ran from 1942-1949; starred on early TV as the host of his own variety program "The Ken Murray Show" 1950-1953; later a regular on "The Judy Garland Show" 1964; Author of "Life on a Pogo Stick" 1960 and "The Golden Days of San Simeon" 1971. Velez (1908-1944), born July 18, 1908, San Luis Potosi (the daughter of a prostitute), Mexico; died December 13, 1944, Beverly Hills California, Mexican-born screen actress, noted for her 7 "Mexican Spitfire" films and her tragic suicide; married to Johnny Weissmuller 1933-1938; film career 1927-1944; in 1924, Lupe started that career on the Mexican stage and wowed audiences with her natural beauty and talent; by 1927, she had emigrated to Hollywood where she was discovered by Hal Roach who cast her in a comedy with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy; Douglas Fairbanks cast her in his feature film "The Gaucho" with himself and Mary Pickford; Lupe played dramatic roles for five years before she switched to comedy; in 1933, she played the lead role of Pepper in "Hot Pepper." Lupe appeared in three fine comedies, "Strictly Dynamite", "Palooka" and "Laughing Boy"; by now her popularity was such that a series of Mexican Spitfire films were written around her; Velez portrayed Carmelita Lindsay in "Mexican Spitfire" 1939; "The Mexican Spitfire Out West" 1940; "Mexican Spitfire’s Baby" 1941; and "Mexican Spitfire’s Blessed Event" 1943 among many others. Audiences loved her in these madcap adventures but it seemed, at times, she was better known for her stormy love affairs. She married one of her lovers, Johnny Weissmuller, but that only lasted five years and was filled with battles. Lupe certainly did live up to her nickname. She had a failed romance with Gary Cooper, who never wanted to wed her. By 1943, her career was waning. She went to Mexico in the hopes of giving herself a jump start. She gained the best reviews yet in the Mexican version of "Nana."; bolstered by that movie, Lupe returned to the US where she starred in her final film as Pepita Zorita in "Ladies’ Day"; on December 13, 1944, tired of yet another failed romance with Harold Raymond and pregnant with his child, Lupe committed suicide with an overdose of seconal. She was only 36 years old.

A German diplomat's unfaithful fiancee arranges for a disreputable nightclub singer to seduce the diplomat as a means of revenge for calling off the wedding. The third major US film to feature noted Mexican actress Lupe Velez, who also appeared in "The Gaucho" (1927), "Stand and Deliver" (1928), and "Wolf Song" and "Where East Is East" (1929). Set in Paris. Blue titled wrappers, with screenwriter credits for Sam Taylor and Hans Kraly, and novel credits for Carl Vollmoeller [sic]. Vintage glossy 8x10 portrait from MGM's film Kongo, signed and inscribed in black fountain pen to Mush. In fine condition, with the typed slip mentioning Kongo attached to the back. Signed in person at the performance of Idiot's Delight at the Shubert Theatre on April 2, 1936, with the date notation in ink on back.
