This book is a collection of papers and discussions from the Medical Society of the County of New York, offering a snapshot of the medical knowledge and concerns of the day. The author, the societyâs president, explores questions of medical education, public health, and care for the cityâs most vulnerable populations. Notably, he addresses the newly accepted practice of admitting women to medical school and the profession. A practicing physician himself, the author brings a practical perspective to his discussions on topics including the role of medical science in society, the need for meticulous research, and the importance of raising the standards of the medical profession. His passionate call to protect the lives of abandoned children, in particular, illuminates not only the authorâs humanity but also his grasp of the social and economic benefits of a healthy society. Through these discussions, this book provides valuable insights into mid-19th century medical thought and practice in New York City. William Thompson Lusk rose to the rank of Assistant Adjutant-General in the United States Volunteers during the first three years of the war. Lusk did not practice the usual custom of vilifying the Southern soldiers; his letters indicate that he respected the Southerners and spoke of "Yankee hordes" invading the Southerners' "splendid plantations' . Lusk took part in engagements at Blackburn's Ford, First Bull Run, Port Royal, James Island, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and many other minor battles. He was also a staff officer of Isaac I. Stevens until Stevens' death, and he commanded two companies during the Draft Riots of 1863. REFERENCES: DORN NY 401; COULTER 300: "This is an excellent series of letters, especially good on conditions in South Carolina." ; NEVINS I pg. 123: "One of the better collections of Federal soldiers' letters; especially good for operations around Beaufort, S.C."
