The unique combination of visual and acoustic elements; the work-ing together of language, gesture, mimic and music; of images and sound, offer an im-pressive account of reality. Wedding explains: 'With the best films, the viewer experi-ences a sort of dissociative state in which ordinary existence is temporarily suspended. No other art form pervades the consciousness of the individual experiencing it to the same extent and with such power.' Of course one may argue that some literary works can have the same absorbing effect, still the medium film is undoubtedly a very power-ful one when it comes to captivating people's attention. Films 'have become a perva-sive and omnipresent part of our society with little conscious awareness of the pro-found influence the medium may be exerting' . One extremely widespread and popular genre is the thriller and its subgenres. Ranging from spy, gangster and science-fiction films to horror films, splatters and stalkers, there is hardly any film that has not been labelled a thriller. A relatively new develop-ment within the thriller is the topic of mental illness and psychopathology. Two recent examples are The Machinist by Brad Anderson and Lucid by Sean Garrity. In both films, the directors concern themselves with trauma and its impact on the psyche of the re-spective protagonists. In his book 'The Suspense Thriller', Derry outlines a new thriller subgenre: the psy-chotraumatic thriller. I shall like to discuss whether Lucid and The Machinist may or may not be subsumed under this label.In the following, I will first outline the plots of the two films. Then I shall want to concen-trate on the acute and post-traumatic stress disorder of the main protagonists. After that, I shall have a look at the thriller genre in general and at the posttraumatic thriller genre in particular. Touching briefly on the question why films are especially well suited to depict psychopathological films and what possibilities directors have to por-tray mental illness, I shall like to continue with Derry's eight-part formula of the psy-chotraumatic thriller.

All the Pretty Horses was first published in 1992 and is the first part of his Border Trilogy. As Morrison notesmost of McCarthy's novels [.] involve both metaphorical and literal journeys which bring their voyagers inevitably into a series of conflicts and confrontations with themselves as well as with the various communities intersected be their wanderings. And, in most of these novels, the central characters' journeys, however random in time and place they may be, are apparently rooted in dysfunctinal families and troubled filial relationships. This also applies to All The Pretty Horses. In this novel, Cormac McCarthy concerns himself with the development of his main protagonist, the 16-year-old John Grady Cole: At the beginning of the novel, McCarthy portrays John Grady as a boy in search for adventure, freedom and a home. During his journey to Mexico however, he soon has to grow up. He has to witness the execution of his compagnion; he is put in jail even though he is innocent; he has to fight with other convicts, and at last he is attacked by a hired killer. He thus has to learn that the world is a dangerous and violent place and that the world portrayed in All The Pretty Horses has nothing to do with an idyllic wild country as the novel's title might suggest. In the end, John Grady has hardened. He has killed a man, he has lost his innocence and he returns as a man and as a hero.In the following, I will first outline the plot of the novel. Then I shall want to concentrate on the development of its main character. Last, I like to discuss whether All the Pretty Horses may be read as a Bildungsroman. I will come to the conclusion that McCarthy's novel is partly a Bildungsroman and partly a Western for several reasons which I shall point out in due course.

The strong connexion between memory and identity is a very prominent topic in contemporary British fiction and the significance of memory is discussed in many literary works. One of this books is Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel A Pale View of Hills. In this novel, Kazuo Ishiguro concerns himself with memories and their problematic function in the process of forming one's identity. All of his novels he has published so far deal with 'individuals scanning their past for clues to their identity, loss, or abandonment.' This also applies to A Pale View of Hills. The novel, Childs summarizes, 'is a gentle meditation on memory and sublimated pain, which uses fantasy and displacement to reveal indirectly the distress of a woman who has lost her homeland, her husbands, and her elder daughter.' In the following, I will first outline the plot of the novel. Then I shall want to concentrate on memory as a means to create identity and to avoid responsibility. I shall also discuss the unreliability of the narrator. As we will see, this unreliability enables the reader to decipher the narrator's memories. At last I shall try to answer the question how the main protagonist in the novel uses his memory to overcome a loss by transferring her guilt onto an imagenary character.

Zwischen den ersten auf Felswänden aufgemalten Zeichnungen bis hin zu multimedialen Texten im 21. Jahrhundert hat sich die Schrift sowohl optisch als auch hinsichtlich ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion stark gewandelt. Der Frage nachzugehen, inwiefern Schrift auch im Zeitalter der digitalen Medien eine Rolle spielt, wird Inhalt folgender Arbeit sein.In seinem berühmten Werk 'Oralität und Literalität. Die Technologisierung des Wortes.' stellt Walter J. Ong die These auf, das Schreiben konstruiere das Denken neu. Wie keine andere Technologie habe das Schreiben unser Bewusstsein und unser Denken verändert, so Ongs Behauptung. Folgende Arbeit wird sich mit der Bedeutung der Schrift näher auseinanderset-zen und dabei versuchen zu erklären, ob und inwieweit das Schreiben unser Denken neu konstruiert. Die Arbeit wird sich weitestgehend chronologisch an Ongs Werk orientieren, jedoch auch einige neue Aspekte einbringen. So wird im achten Kapitel der Begriff des kulturellen Gedächtnisses eingeführt, anhand dessen Ongs Thesen bestätigt werden sollen. Im neunten Kapitel sollen Ongs Thesen mit jenen von Eric A. havelock kontrastiert werden. Zentraler Kern der Arbeit ist die Frage, ob und inwiefern das Schreiben unser Denken beeinflusst.

Ranging from spy, gangster and science-fiction films to horror films, splatters and stalkers, there is hardly any film that has not been labelled a thriller. A relatively new develop-ment within the thriller is the topic of mental illness and psychopathology. Two recent examples are The Machinist by Brad Anderson and Lucid by Sean Garrity. In both films, the directors concern themselves with trauma and its impact on the psyche of the re-spective protagonists. In his book 'The Suspense Thriller', Derry outlines a new thriller subgenre: the psy-chotraumatic thriller. I shall like to discuss whether Lucid and The Machinist may or may not be subsumed under this label.In the following, I will first outline the plots of the two films. Then I shall want to concen-trate on the acute and post-traumatic stress disorder of the main protagonists. After that, I shall have a look at the thriller genre in general and at the posttraumatic thriller genre in particular. Touching briefly on the question why films are especially well suited to depict psychopathological films and what possibilities directors have to por-tray mental illness, I shall like to continue with Derry's eight-part formula of the psy-chotraumatic thriller. 28 pp. Englisch.

With the publication of this sixth novel, for which he won both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award , he gained widespread recognition as an American writer. All the Pretty Horses was first published in 1992 and is the first part of his Border Trilogy. As Morrison notesmost of McCarthy's novels [.] involve both metaphorical and literal journeys which bring their voyagers inevitably into a series of conflicts and confrontations with themselves as well as with the various communities intersected be their wanderings. And, in most of these novels, the central characters' journeys, however random in time and place they may be, are apparently rooted in dysfunctinal families and troubled filial relationships. This also applies to All The Pretty Horses. In this novel, Cormac McCarthy concerns himself with the development of his main protagonist, the 16-year-old John Grady Cole: At the beginning of the novel, McCarthy portrays John Grady as a boy in search for adventure, freedom and a home. During his journey to Mexico however, he soon has to grow up. He has to witness the execution of his compagnion; he is put in jail even though he is innocent; he has to fight with other convicts, and at last he is attacked by a hired killer. He thus has to learn that the world is a dangerous and violent place and that the world portrayed in All The Pretty Horses has nothing to do with an idyllic wild country as the novel's title might suggest. In the end, John Grady has hardened. He has killed a man, he has lost his innocence and he returns as a man and as a hero.In the following, I will first outline the plot of the novel. Then I shall want to concentrate on the development of its main character. Last, I like to discuss whether All the Pretty Horses may be read as a Bildungsroman. I will come to the conclusion that McCarthy's novel is partly a Bildungsroman and partly a Western for several reasons which I shall point out in due course. 28 pp. Englisch.

In this novel, Kazuo Ishiguro concerns himself with memories and their problematic function in the process of forming one's identity. All of his novels he has published so far deal with 'individuals scanning their past for clues to their identity, loss, or abandonment.' This also applies to A Pale View of Hills. The novel, Childs summarizes, 'is a gentle meditation on memory and sublimated pain, which uses fantasy and displacement to reveal indirectly the distress of a woman who has lost her homeland, her husbands, and her elder daughter.'
