Consequently, a rise has been observed in the neuropsychiatric manifestations of HIV. Clinicians now face the challenge of managing HIV and mental illness (MI) comorbidity, requiring integration between mental health and general medical care. This study aimed to evaluate the inpatient management of HIV-MI comorbidity in a psychiatric unit. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted. Records of patients admitted to the unit with a diagnosis of HIV-MI comorbidity from June 2011 to June 2012 were retrieved and analysed. RESULTS: The management of psychiatric disorders was excellent for all patients. However challenges were observed in HIV management.Generally, the coordination of care between psychiatrists and other disciplines was insufficient. CONCLUSION: There is a fragmentation of care for patients with HIV-MI comorbidity. An integrated management approach need to be implemented 72 pp. Englisch.

En consecuencia, se ha observado un aumento de las manifestaciones neuropsiquiátricas del VIH. Los clínicos se enfrentan ahora al reto de tratar la comorbilidad del VIH y las enfermedades mentales (EM), lo que requiere la integración entre la atención de salud mental y la atención médica general. El objetivo de este estudio era evaluar el tratamiento hospitalario de la comorbilidad VIH-EM en una unidad psiquiátrica. MÉTODOS: Se realizó un estudio transversal retrospectivo. Se recuperaron y analizaron los registros de los pacientes ingresados en la unidad con diagnóstico de comorbilidad VIH-IM entre junio de 2011 y junio de 2012. RESULTADOS: El manejo de los trastornos psiquiátricos fue excelente en todos los pacientes. En general, la coordinación de la atención entre los psiquiatras y otras disciplinas fue insuficiente. CONCLUSIÓN: Existe una fragmentación de la atención a los pacientes con comorbilidad VIH-IM. Es necesario aplicar un enfoque de gestión integrada.
