Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. In the epicenter of 18th-century religious and political upheaval, this book tells the tale of the Rockingham Meeting House. A beacon of Puritanical austerity in the heart of Rockingham, Vermont, this meetinghouse served as both a civic and spiritual hub for the community. Built in 1787, it stands today as a testament to the fortitude and devotion of the town's early settlers. This book explores the Meeting House's integral role in the town's development, from its humble beginnings as a tiny structure in 1774, to its pivotal role in the establishment of the town's first church in 1773, and its subsequent expansion to accommodate the growing community. The book delves into the challenges faced by the Meeting House, including its incomplete state during the Revolutionary War and its gradual decline in the 19th century. It also examines the evolution of the town's religious landscape, marked by the rise and fall of various denominations, and the Meeting House's pivotal role in shaping this dynamic. This book is not just a chronicle of a building; it is a chronicle of the people who built it, the lives they lived, and the indelible mark they left on their community. Through the Meeting House, the author provides a lens into the complex tapestry of early American history, capturing the hopes, dreams, and struggles of a community striving to define itself in the crucible of a new nation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
