Rear cover advertises contemporary musical comedy numbers from The Girl Friend, Garrick Gaieties, and Americana. Song of the Flame was one of the major operetta-style Broadway spectacles of the 1920s, remembered for blending Russian-themed romance, lavish staging, and early jazz-age theatricality. Cossack Love Song became among its best-known melodies and is notable for involving George Gershwin during the formative years before his greatest Broadway and concert successes. The cover design is an excellent example of Jazz Age theatrical graphics, with strong geometric typography and stylized costume illustration typical of mid-1920s Harms publications. Condition: Good to Very Good. Front cover cleanly separated at the spine fold but present and complete; interior pages remain attached and fully legible. Light edge wear, small edge nicks, and moderate age toning consistent with 1920s sheet music. Mild corner wear and a few short closed tears at margins. Despite the spine separation, the vivid Art Deco cover graphics remain highly displayable, and the music pages are clean overall. Copyright date MCMXXVI (1926) printed to interior music page. George Gershwin (1898-1937) became one of the defining American composers of the twentieth century, bridging Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, jazz, and classical music through works such as Rhapsody in Blue, Porgy and Bess, and numerous standards. Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960), later famed for collaborations with Richard Rodgers, helped shape the modern American musical. Herbert Stothart (1885-1949) was a prolific Broadway and Hollywood composer and arranger whose later film work earned Academy Award recognition.

The book contains 16 lithographs Porgy & Bess has been controversial since its premiere in 1935; Kara Walker is known for her controversial art on themes of race, violence, and American history. In her Artist's Statement, she says of the characters: "they've become archetypes of another no less grand drama, that of: 'American Negroes drawn up by white authors, and retooled by individual actors, amid charges of racism, and counter charges of high-art on stage and screen, in the face of social and political upheaval, over generations." This fraught status, along with memories of her mother's reaction to a cast recording, led her to render them in a straightforward way, ".more an homage to the feeling of the music. This artist book ofPorgy & Bess,the libretto by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin, is the occasion for Kara Walker's first series of lithographs. The book contains 16 lithographs, with another four images not in the book in a separate portfolio. Porgy & Bess has been controversial since its premiere in 1935; Kara Walker is known for her controversial art on themes of race, violence, and American history. In her Artist's Statement, she says of the characters: "they've become archetypes of another no less grand drama, that of: 'American Negroes drawn up by white authors, and retooled by individual actors, amid charges of racism, and counter charges of high-art on stage and screen, in the face of social and political upheaval, over generations." This fraught status, along with memories of her mother's reaction to a cast recording, led her to render them in a straightforward way, "more an homage to the feeling of the music. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. Gershwin read Porgy in 1926 and proposed that he… should collaborate with Heyward on Porgy and Bess. In 1934, Gershwin and Heyward began work on the project by visiting the author's native Charleston. Gershwin explained why he called Porgy and Bess a folk opera in a 1935 New York Times article: "Porgy and Bess is a folk tale. Its people naturally would sing folk music. When I first began work in the music I decided against the use of original folk material because I wanted the music to be all of one piece. Therefore I wrote my own spirituals and folksongs. But they are still folk music â" and therefore, being in operatic form, Porgy and Bess becomes a folk opera." Today, Porgy and Bess is widely considered to be Gershwinâs masterpiece. This deluxe edition of the piano-vocal score (according to Fuld, no orchestral score has ever been published) was published in 1935, the year of Porgy and Bess premiere, almost simultaneously with the first edition, and is boldly signed on the limitation page (at the rear) by George and Ira Gershwin and the other principal creators of Porgy and Bess: librettist DuBose Heyward and director Rouben Mamoulian (Fuld, 539).
