Marbled fore-edge faded. Deserves rebinding--and the 56 frameable full-page engravings alone are collectible. Includes Chaucer, Spenser, Milton, Goethe, Schiller, Thomas Moore, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain are among the best.

I was astonished to go through it, albeit quickly, and realize that it reminded me of good books and their proponents. I found the brief but interesting and informative biographie…s of more than 90 authors in this book, many with engraved portraits. I believe that this is a First Edition with almost the same dates on title and copyright page. It was "Sold Only by Subscription". The page edges are full gilt. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are clean and bright, perhaps a bit dust-dulled and slightly bumped at corner and spine tips. Inside, I found the neatly written inked name of a former owner and date and also someone, probably this same former owner, judging by the neat penmanship, wrote in information about the date of death of Louisa May Alcott. Otherwise, the pages are clean and bright, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
