[.]" Kurt Mühlethaler war Assistent von Albert Frey-Wyssling am pflanzenphysiolog. Institut der ETH Zürich gewesen und wurde dort 1959 ao. Professor für Elektronenmikroskopie, 1965 Professor für Molekular- und ab 1981 für Zellbiologie. Mühlethaler trug Entscheidendes dazu bei, die Ultrastruktur der Zellen mit Hilfe elektronenmikroskopischer Aufnahmen zu erfassen (Entdeckung der Mikrofibrillenstruktur, Untersuchung der Blattgrünkörner). 1961 schuf er mit Hans J. Moor eine neue Arbeitsmethodik zur Aufzeichnung des molekularbiologischen Zellaufbaus, die sog. Gefrierätzung, die in der Folge weltweit auch bei menschlichen Zellen angewandt wurde" (Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz, s. v.).
