The photographs collected constituted the kernel of… the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.

The series of exhibitions, initiated by Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation… Istanbul Research Institute, on architects and city planners who have left their imprint on Istanbul, continued with Edoardo de Nari, one of the leading Italian architects active during the intriguing and colorful period of transition from the end of the Ottoman era to the first twenty-five years of the young Republic. The exhibition, compiled from the private archives of Büke Uras, as well as different collections, not only stood testimony to the interesting life and career of an architect's life between 1895 and 1954, but it also provided an architectural and social reading of the first half of the 20th century in Istanbul through a multifaceted individual; an Istanbul architect. Although Edoardo De Nari may have been neglected in the history of local architecture, he nonetheless stood out in the architecture of his period in Istanbul. He was gifted in many areas and possessed qualifications that allowed him to practice his professional career in foreign lands: architect, engineer, composer, world traveler, and, finally, politician. While revealing the real designer of a number of buildings whose architect remained unknown or ambiguous to date, the exhibition Architect of Changing Time: Edoardo De Nari also reflected, through the different styles of the architect, the aesthetic proclivities of a cosmopolitan upper class enjoying their final days in Istanbul.

This time, the series continues with Edoardo de Nari, one of the leading Italian architects active during the intriguing and colorful period of transition from the end of the Ottoman era to the first twenty-five years of the young Republic. The exhibition, compiled from the private archives of Buke Uras, as well as different collections, not only stands testimony to the interesting life and career of an architect's life between 1895 and 1954, but it also provides an architectural and social reading of the first half of the 20th century in Istanbul through a multifaceted individual; an Istanbul architect. Although Edoardo De Nari may have been neglected in the history of local architecture, he nonetheless stood out in the architecture of his period in Istanbul. He was gifted in many areas and possessed qualifications that allowed him to practice his professional career in foreign lands: architect, engineer, composer, world traveler, and, finally, politician. While revealing the real designer of a number of buildings whose architect remained unknown or ambiguous to date, the exhibition Architect of Changing Time: Edoardo De Nari also reflects, through the different styles of the architect, the aesthetic proclivities of a cosmopolitan upper class enjoying their final days in Istanbul. The memories, letters, journals, photographs, documents, and drawings comprising the exhibition not only provide us with a glimpse into the daily life and social circle of the architect, but they also mirror the sorrowful final period of a Beyoglu bourgeoisie and a cosmopolitan Istanbul that no longer exist today.

Restoration of the Piyale Pasa Mosque in Istanbul. "Piyale Pasha Moque and its Social Complex were construction cluster constructed by Arc…hitect Sinan upon the request of Kaptan-i Derya Piyale Pasa in 1573. It was constructed as a social complex consisting of mosque, education center, lodge, mausoleum, special part, ottoman elementary-primary school, market and Ottoman bath; however, only the mosque and mausoleum reached to today. The mosque in the 30,5x19,5 sizes and with rectangular plan is located on two big granite columns and arches and covered with six domes each of which has a diameter for 9 meters. Even if it is considered within Pre-Ottoman Grand Mosque in Anatolia with its six domes, Piyale Pasha Mosque is thought to be an example which was developed and made thinner through the new method of Sinan. One of the very rare tile mihrabs of classical period takes place in the marble minbar mosque. The sole minaret of the mosque which does not comply with the architectural traditions of the period with its domes, arches, entrance portico takes place right on the entrance and it has a single balcony. The mosque was ruined because of the surrounding dense structuring activities, omissions, and natural disasters such as fires and earthquakes in time. All cement-based joints and plasters were rasped and therefore, original hand-drawn works were found out and protected within the scope of the restoration works. Upon the removal of the screed layers on the top cover, the original dome figures were revealed. The work was reached to its original identity and unlicensed constructions in the parcel were demolished and environmental planning was realized at the end of the restoration.".

During a period in the Anatolian Middle Ages, with which are not very well known, a new people moved from the East to Asia Minor; and a new state flourished around its capital Konya. For two centuries, this state constituted one of the most important cultural leaps on these lands. The Anatolian Seljuk State that initially seemed to be an extension of the Great Seljuk State of Iran, acquired autonomy quickly; and despite its relatively short life-span, brought together elements of Middle Asian, Persian, Arabian, Byzantine, Armenian and Turkmen cultures, in the grandest synthesis in the history of Anatolian civilizations, and irreversibly annexed the peninsula to the Turkish geography. This was a golden area that began to shine suddenly on the complex administrative and cultural map of the 12th century Anatolia. It was as if someone had rubbed a magic lamp; and on the steppes that had grown weary under numerous raids and wars, cities, palaces and magnificent city walls were built; and with extensive caravan routes, caravanserais, temples, hospitals, a fresh breath of prosperity and civilization was blown unto the peninsula. The brightest and the most interesting period of this era was the very short time between 1220-1237 when Sultan I: Alaeddin Keykubad reigned. This 'Seljuk Century of Bliss' sandwiched between the Crusades and the Mongol invasion, lasted approximately 100 years; and left a mark grander than the Ottomans would leave in 500 years of rule. In the exhibition prepared jointly by the Yapi Kredi Cultural Activities, Arts and Publishing and the General Directorate of Monuments and Museums of the Ministry of Culture, the Anatolian Seljuks that left unalterable marks on the Anatolian geography with palaces, caravanserais, medreses and mosques, are examined on the axis of this luminous Sultan I. Alaeddin Keykubad period. Aladdin's Lamp exhibition aims to read once again this interesting period of the Anatolian cultural history with a new perspective, in the wake of a symbolic portrait of Alaeddin Keykubad. With pieces from the Konya Karatay Çini Eserler Müzesi, Konya I'nce Minareli Medrese Tas Eserler Müzesi, Konya Mevlana Müzesi, Adana Arkeoloji Müzesi, Istanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri, Topkapi Sarayi Müzesi, Vehbi Koç Vakfi Sadberk Hanim Müzesi and the private collections of Kaya Turgut, Ferit Edgü, Mehmet Ürgüplü, Özlem and Haluk Perk, over 150 Seljuk works are exhibited. T…his lodge, which developed over time and was referred to as "Mevlevîhâne der Bâb-i Cedîd" in certain Ottoman sources, ranked second following the Galata Mevlevi Lodge by its establishment date. This lodge, which however could not resist the impacts of time and only foundations and dilapidated buildings were left behind from its brilliant structure by the time we reached the 21st century, was the very same Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge. With the repair and protection project conducted by Güryapi Restoration during 2005-2010, the Yenikapi Mevlevi Lodge did not only return to its past magisterial days, but also started to serve as an international education center within the organization of Fatih Sultan Mehmed Foundation University.The book titled "Yenikapi Mevlevîhanesi Restorasyonu 2005-2010", that has been published with over 250 photographs, archive documents and survey drawings and was prepared under the editorship of Prof. Dr. M. Baha Tanman, sheds light on the most comprehensive repair and protection process in the history of the Mevlevi Lodge and its history when it served as a science, wisdom and guidance center that has led the rearing of artists, composers and performers once upon a time.
