Ce quatrain de Voltaire illustre sa relation avec Freron, ils furent toute leur vie opposés, Le journal de Fréron se veut « le dieu du… goût » contre les Philosophes affichant une ambition encyclopédique et un goût pour l'histoire, les sciences et les problèmes de la vie courante. C'est précisément en 1752 que Fréron va trouver le clan qui le protégera : celui de Stanislas de Pologne, de la Reine, du Dauphin. Désormais Fréron s'efforcera de ménager Voltaire pour concentrer ses attaques sur les Philosophes qui commencent à s'organiser en un parti dangereux. Il exploitera donc à merveille l'affaire des Bouffons pour en faire une campagne de presse contre cette cabale d'étrangers menée par Grimm et Jean-Jacques Rousseau (Cf. Jean Balcou).
