Henneberger. 1921 1st edition; Office of "The Chess Amateur"; Stroud, UK. Edited by George Hume and Alain C. White. This copy contains a tipped-in Christmas Greetings slip from White at the front:… "Wishing You a Merry Christmas. Alain C. White. Litchfield, Conn. U.S.A. Dec. 25th, 1921." The book contains illustrations of chess board positions and photographic portraits throughout. This title is part of White's annual "Christmas Series." Alain C. White was an internationally renowned expert on chess. He collected one of the most comprehensive libraries on chess problems in the world. Between 1905 and 1936, he wrote or edited 44 annual volumes known as the "Christmas Series," which he sent to other chess enthusiasts; the volumes often contained a Christmas Greetings slip inside (the slip is present within this particular copy). The books were highly valued for their collection of diverse and challenging chess problems. They were initially sent as free gifts to friends of White, but they were also offered for sale. The books are considered a significant contribution to the world of Chess problems. Condition: Light soiling to the covers. The gilt lettering on the spine has partially faded. There are cracks at the front and rear hinges with the webbing exposed resulting in the covers being a bit shaky. The text pages are in nice condition - clean with only a 1.5" tear at the top edge of page 235 and the following blank rear end paper. The "Dr. M. Henneberger" photographic plate is present but has detached. Overall the book is in Good- condition.

Index of composers. - Publisher of the series was chess composer and enthusiast Alain Campbell White (1880-1951). A. C. White sent most books of the series to his friends as Christmas gifts. But they were offered for sale, too. The series consists from 44 books on problem chess and one pamphlet from 1912. Most books are hard covers, bound in red cloth with gold lettering, usually written in English, sometimes in German and French and one was partially in Czech. Most books have printed Christmas wish slip by White, usually bound in after a title page. It appears that a part of edition of some books has wish slips and a part does not. Number of copies published of separate volumes is not known.
