L'ouvre temoigne de l'immense succes du langage pictural de Bosch au xvie siecle. Sa taille, la qualite de son execution et la creativite de son auteur lui conferent une place particuliere dans la vaste production des epigones du maitre. Le tableau, reste en mains privees jusqu'a ce jour, etait a peine connu et n'avait plus ete etudie ou examine depuis plusieurs decennies. C'est pourquoi, le Fonds du Patrimoine a confie au prof. Jos Koldeweij de la Radboud Universiteit de Nimegue et a Matthijs Ilsink, coordinateur du Bosch Research and Conservation Project a Bois-le-Duc, la realisation d'une etude critique et d'une analyse approfondie du panneau. Ils situent sans equivoque la Montee au Calvaire parmi les peintures qui perpetuent la tradition de Jerome Bosch, en devoilent les sources et la signification tout en refutant definitivement l'ancienne attribution a Jan Mandijn.
