Sir Peter Carew (1514 27 November 1575) of Mohuns Ottery, Luppitt, Devon, was an English adventurer, who served during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England and took part in the Tudor conquest of Ireland. In the original blue cloth boards with gilt titling to the spine and an attractive bright gilt circular 'MacCarthy' decorative device to the front board. The h…ead & tail of the spine are a little 'bumped' with a small loss to the blue cloth at the foot of the spine - now coloured to match - and a small 1" split to the front bottom side of the spine - now neatly re-glued. The blue of the spine is a little faded/patchy and the gilt titling isn't as quite as bright as on the front board but all is clear and visible. The corners of the boards are lightly 'bumped'. The front and rear boards are clean and bright. ALL hinges tight and secure. The book is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks near VG. Internally plain brown endpapers. The front pastedown has a former owners' heraldic bookplate (Fitzwilliams of Cilgwyn) stuck to its centre. A tiny bookbinders label is at the foot of the rear pastedown ( Kelly & Sons, Water St, Strand). The page fore-edges are lightly browned, but are generally clean. Internally a little light and very scattered foxing (light brown spotting) to the first few and last few pages but overall NO Inscriptions or Marks. (xii) + Erratum leaf + 515 pp. Overall a Very Clean, Tight and Bright copy. "Finnian or Fínghin mac Donnchadh Mac Cárthaigh (15601640) , known to the English as Florence MacCarthy, was an Irish prince of the late 16th century and the last credible claimant to the MacCarthy Mór title before its suppression by English authority. MacCarthy's involvement in the Nine Years War (1595-1603) led to his arrest by the crown government, and he spent the last 40 years of his life in custody in London.
