Uncommon outside South Africa, this was an important and, for the time, highly enlightened work in which MacCrone advanced a 'frontier hypothesis' to explain rabid racism and invoked Freudian concepts where appropriate, in some ways an anticipation of the 'authoritarian personality' concept.
