His history, and that of his family, are inextricably entwined with the history of the city in which he was born and lived. Mr. Duff possess a vivid memory of the things of his youth. His ability to sketch and the delight it gave him enabled him to capture for the reader the adventure and progress in the story of the developing city. The drawings in this book were produced to advertise Mr. Duff's insurance company on annual calendars. As the number of sketches increased, many people showed a distinctive interest in them. The author decided to do more drawings, thus creating the material for Pen Sketches of Historic Toronto.
